Review Of The Week!-Guano Apes: Don't Give Me Names
All hail the German band with the name which kinda means the bat shit apes!  However to compare this band to any kind of fecal matter would be the lamest thing anyone could ever do.  The foursome is  back once again with this latest effort which is twice as rockin' as their Proud Like A God release which came out in the states about a year ago. This CD is without a doubt one of the most addicting CDs I've reviewed this semester!  What exactly makes this CD addicting...its all in the multiple styles folks!
Basically, this CD can change gears quicker than you drive to it.  And with the voice of lead vocalist Sandra leading the charge, this disc is guaranteed to slice right through steel. The CD opens up with the rockin' yet melancholy feel of Innocent Greed. However, the second track No Speech is without a doubt the most rockin' songs on the CD!  The song starts with a slow intro which leads to a whole sheed load of catchy hooks and captivating bouncy beats.  Sandra gets right in your face with up front vocals that will demand your assitance in singing along.
Of corse, like the first one there is a fine mix of slow speed songs mixed into the fun up tempo rock format such as
Living In A Lie. Slow yet mellowing to the bone, the song provides the listener with a fine 5 minute head swaying experience.  The track Too Close To Leave is an unexpected jaw dropper which takes on a smooth almost R&B feel with a funky guitar melody and a "lets go make love" pace! Sandra once again shows her versitality giving the listener a voice that would make even the best of "divas" jealous.
However, even though the band throws out these variations in song styles, they remain true to the fun rock which has brought them fame so far.  However, the band is never afraid to mix in a plethora of different sounds.  For example,
Mine All Mine features a fine Spanish esq guitar line throughout the whole song.  Lead single, Dodel Up has a fun bouncy bass line which has almost a humerous feel.  Gogan is absolutely chaotic from its prickling guitar beginning to its explosive ending.
If you are lucky you will get your hands on the limited Digi Pack which contains three extra tracks.  Two of them are excellent unplugged versions of the tracks
Living In A Lie and Anne Claire.
To put it simply this CD is absolutely amazing.  The mix of genres alone will impress just about any rock fan.  Mix that with an oustanding vocal performance from Sandra and you have the winning combination for an awesome CD.  Yeah Dodel Up and rock on!
Random News Bits-Well the first WSKB radio meeting has come and gone.  I was actually amazed at what a small turn out we had even though about 60 or 70 showed up. Oh well...at least a lot of people got shows and there were very few left out.  By the way check out Thursday afternoons for a most excellent line up.  My rockin' buddy Kelly kicks it all off at 12-2 PM with her show of rock and industrial.  Then yours truly, Mark "The Porno Freak" takes over the airwaves for the usual mix 2-4 PM.  DJ radio, hosted by that guy with the nice ass, come on after at 4-6 PM followed by April and her crazy metal show 6-8PM.  Keep in mind that this begins next week and we have tons of shows with formats ranging from techno to hip hop to heavy metal.  Rock on at WSKB !
Speaking of WSKB, you better all be checking out the
Whip City Radio Theatre on Friday nights 10-12 hosted by Chris Slaughter! This is where the radio dramas of times past come alive.  Of corse, some of those dramas are acted out by the Whip City Radio drama team.  For more information check out the official Whip City web site (click above).
I got a chance to do quite a few reviews last week and found several bands that were quite interesting.  Some were a bit generic but still rocked none the less.  One of these bands was Flybanger and their new CD Head Trip To Nowhere. They reminded me from several bands ranging from Pantera to Stone Temple PilotsSo far I am definately diggin' the tracks Calvary (which is heavy as shit) and Pull (which is kinda mellow and has a good flow).  Check this one out when it comes to your local record store...until then I guess you can make all the lame jokes you want about insect sexual intercorse.
The new Boy Hits Car CD is quite the interesting mix of songs.  Some may find their style radical while others may just eat up this rock hybrid.  I could only think that this band was like The Tea Party meets the vocal of Serj of SOAD only heavier...much heavier.  For what its worth, its deifnatly original and I can almost guarantee that this band will grow on you after a few listens! Try out the tracks The Rebirth and Going To India to find out what I mean.
Oh by the way...did I mention that we recently got in the new 3 song sampler from
Clutch?  Oh yeah...blarring stoner rock to the max baby!  I can only imagine what the new CD is going to sound like...check it out one time won't you!
Well I gotta go...I have a pile of annoying fantasy power metal to review so I will catch you all later! Remember next week we are back on the air full time...request a song at (413) 572-5427...rock on!
