STATUS: Heels. Tag team, "Daughters of Darkness".
WRESTLING: I don't really keep track of which one is in the ring. In general, the gals in hoods do a pretty decent job, though. They have some power moves and don't look worse than anyone else out there. They do, however, do the worst-looking fake "karate chops" I've ever seen.
CHARACTER: None, 'cuz you see, it's a Mystery! And a Misery. Damn, that didn't work.
LOOKS: Mystery at least has a nice body, but the black hood is not really a favorite look of mine.
COMMENTS: Strange, strange story here. Mystery debuted as a part of a truly stupid angle in which Terri Gold was mugged and the WOW belt was stolen. The whole thing was just presented very melodramatically, with McLane going "WHERE IS TERRI'S BELT???" about 500 times, and it was far more annoying than exciting. After burning a picture of Terri on the WOWVision (McLane: "WHAT MADMAN WOULD DO SUCH A THING???"), Mystery, under the hood, fought Terri, and Terri won and got the belt back (even though, if I am remembering this correctly, Mystery did not actually bring the belt to the match.)
Presumably, you'd figure that if your very entrance into the league is a major storyline, and if you get a title shot as your first match, you would go on to become a major character? Well, if you figured that, you couldn't be more wrong. Mystery basically disappeared after losing to Terri, and in fact, recently the Daughters of Darkness lost to the Beach Patrol ... the very opposite of being pushed. You'd at least figure they would finish the storyline and tell us who Mystery was? Nope. We can only assume that she was someone completely new to WOW. That's some compelling mystery, huh?
The scary thing is that Mystery is the best handled aspect of the Daughters of Darkness. Misery just appeared one day, no explanation or nothing. Mystery and Misery are accompanied by ... The Goon. The Goon looks like the Shockmaster of WCW infamy. He stands there, dressed in an aluminum foil mask like Mom used to make, and does damn near nothing. Occasionally, he trips a wrestler who ventures to his side of the ring. But sometimes, he has literally done nothing except stand there. What are they thinking? Could they possibly think this looks cool? It looks like a reject from the "Masters of the Universe" movie starring Dolph Lundgren. Get him far, far away from this earth, now.
Back to Mystery...yes, it was a dumb angle, and it would have been better if it had never been done in the first place. But once you've launched into it, you should at least finish it right. You could do it right by unmasking Mystery; by making Mystery a top heel; or by dropping her altogether. They did none of those things, and found the one thing that didn't make any sense. Mystery is now wandering around WOW with no niche whatsoever. Based on a WOWE.com website screwup, she is probably going to be revealed as "Sharon Bruneau" soon. It will be an uphill battle to get anyone to care.
UPDATES:
2/4/01 (PPV):
- The Daughters of Darkness did not appear at the PPV. Speculation is that they
have been repackaged as Law & Order, and since
every other active wrestler did have a PPV match, that is probably right.
I will have to see it myself to be sure, though. I suppose there is a lot to
be said for scrapping the Daughters, who were obviously going nowhere, but it
doesn't change the fact that the Mystery angle was a lame idea done in a half-assed
manner. May it at least be quickly forgotten.
2/18/01 (show #20):
- Well, they appeared in this pre-PPV-taped show, which doesn't really shed
any light on their status. Get this, though...in this episode, they got a title
shot. For losing to the Beach Patrol, they get a title shot? Makes absolutely
zero sense. Now that I've seen the PPV (thanks, Phil), I can say they're definitely
not Law & Order, though. The Goon's mask actually fell off this week, revealing
it to be one of those things with a rubber band you put around your head. Then
he got his ass kicked. I wish I could say something nice about this gimmick.
It just really stinks.
