Acorn
On Sunday (28-Jan) morning at 4:00am, just as we'd hit the end of the 36th week of the pregnancy, Christine's waters broke. Needless to say, we weren't yet quite prepared for the baby's arrival. Among the smaller issues...the mom-to-be's hospital bag wasn't packed. Among the bigger issues...we hadn't yet attended even one birthing classes (long story that...partially our fault, but not entirely). The upshot, we were scared silly (Christine crying and blaming herself for messing up; me stoic and trying to appear organised/in-control).
We had an uneventful drive to the hospital, and Christine was admitted to the Labour Ward at about 5:00am. After a brief caucus, the doctor on-duty and the nurse-midwife (who knew our OB/GYN quite well) suggested putting the labour on hold for a couple of days to allow Siphiwe's lungs a chance to mature a bit more. We agreed, and the hospital staff gave Christine a couple of shots (steriods--to help mature Siphiwe's lungs; antibiotics--to provide mother and baby protection against infection creeping into the now unprotected uterus) and set her on a drip (IV) through which they administered a drug to relax Christine's uterus and stave off labour. More or less this is how things stayed until Monday morning.
