Unfortunately, he had made a little measurement error--an error he discovered at about 2:00pm. As it turns out, at noon Christine had probably only dilated 4-5 cm--basically her uterus wasn't doing its job quite right. As a result, at 2:00pm, when he realised his mistake, Doc Harrison started to prepare us mentally for the possibility that Christine would have a caesarian section (which they call a Caesar, like the salad, in South Africa). At 4:00pm, Dr. Harrison was pretty darn sure it'd be a Caesar, but at 6:00pm he gauged that there'd been some progress in the dilation of Christine's cervix and opened up the possibility once again for a vaginal delivery. When he came in at 7:30pm, however, it was clear that Christine's uterus just wasn't behaving...it was time for the Caesar.
The op went off without a hitch and at 8:33pm (GMT +2:00) a Sam was born. To wrap the story up, Sam had to spend a couple of days in the neo-natal intensive care unit--a precaution that they take with pretty much all pre-term Caesar babies, but on Saturday the 3rd of February, Christine and I were all on our way home...only slightly less frightened at the prospect of taking care of Sam on our own than we were on the drive to the hospital a week earlier. THE END.
