Black Magic M-66 / Appleseed

Both very good Masamune Shirow creations.
As all of Mr Shirow's anime tends to be, these to are very good examples of his work, and his insight into the future, and how the glass will (inevitably) become half empty.
These titles are'nt particully action oriantated, they seem to be balanced between story and action. I would recommend to watch M-66 before Appleseed (and then Dominion). If you've already seen Ghost In The Shell, you'll be in for quite a change as GITS was Shirow's black sheep if you will.
Very retro, and very entertaining.

SDF-Macross do you remember love? (subtitled)
Another masterpiece of Sci-Fi anime, and look its another Macross title. Even though this was made as a 'movie inside a movie' title, it still holds up as a classic in its own right. The storyline is a dramatization of the events that occur in SDF-Macross the TV series, but still contains some superb action sequences, love entanglements and occurances. Although it is cheesier than the likes of Macross Plus, still has lush world and mecha designs and well defined characters, which makes it the more pleasurable.

Tenchi Muyo / Tenchi Universe
Well what can i say for such diverse series as these.
Tenchi Muyo the first incarnation of the Tenchi world, by all means an exemplary piece of anime. In one 13* episode OAV (* i think) there are elements from Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror and everything in between genres of anime with a comedic pretext.
Lavish animation, wonderful character designs and (dare i say)captivating storlines, this particular OAV culminates into something special.
Tenchi Universe is the secind of the Tenchi series. This is not a continuation of Muyo, but an alternate version of it, re-introducing the characters and the world. However Universe does more than this, it extends on the storylines and the especially the characters. The irritating whines of Ayeka, the incompetance of Mihoshi, and (in my opinion) the repulsiveness of Washu are greatly amplified, and the defunct relationship between Tenchi and Ryoko is still not solved (until.....well you'll find out).
What i thought was greatest loss in Universe, was the character of Sasami, where as she was a pinnacle part of Muyo, she seems to have little patronage, or anything to do  as her character in Universe.
Tenchi Muyo is definately superior to Tenchi Universe, but Universe, after watching Muyo, serves as a great expansion to it. Also Tenchi Universe's series opener and ending are profoundly linked together, bringing together the whole series with a wonderful flow, and an open conclusion.

Dominion Tank Police / New Dominion Tank Police

Another good example of Shirow's work, although this is probably the most flawed of all his anime. I didnt give them
one the hightest rating due to bad art direction in the first series and bad dialogue in the 'new' series, but i did enjoy it. If you enjoyed the Patlabor movies, you are definatly going to enjoy these OAV. They are basically a more light hearted, humorous version of Patlabor.
The first OAV; Dominion Tank Police 1-4, Begins fairly well, but ends very well, with an excellent ending to the (first)story arc.
The second OAV; New Dominion Tank Police 5-10, holds up all of the way through the series, and includes some thought provoking storylines, and is easy on the eye.
I recommned to watch the first series before the second one (but as they are both self contained stories, it probably would'nt make a differance). Very entertaining.
