That's right... on September 10th, 2002 a 50th birthday party was held for the one and only Bill Card, Band Director Extroadinaire. About 4 or 5 days before the party I got a call from Bill's wife, Mary Jane. She wanted me to see if I could get a group of alumni together to surprise Bill by showing up at the party and playing "Happy Birthday" for him. Well this proved to be a pretty tough assignment for a couple of reasons. 1) Of the alumni that still live in the area, there are only a hand-full of us who still play our instruments. 2) This was short notice, and the party was being held on Labor Day. So a log of people already had plans. At anyrate, as most of you already know, I put the word out to the group via E-Mail and Telephone. Due to the short notice, only 4 of you were able to join me in the surprise, and out of the 5 of us, I am the only one who still plays on at least a semi-regular basis. Needless to say, we opted to just sing "Happy Birthday" instead. I only took a few pictures. If'n you'd been there, you would have been able to see it all, but since you weren't, you'll have to settle for the few pictures I did manage to take. Now I know it has been awhile since most of you have seen Bill. He really is in these pictures. He just doesn't look the same as most of us remember him. I've seen him several times in the last 5 or 6 years and I still had to ask Mary Jane where he was. He was right in front of me, about 15 feet away. So, here is a hint. For once, he's wearing the hat, and I'm not. :) Enjoy! - Bob - |
