Michael Schumacher
The true greats are measured by their heart, their determination,
their driving force, their conduct. While there is no doubting Schumacher
is one of the most fiercely competitive men the sport has ever produced,
the way he uses his desire, the way ituses him, presents an ugly side
that the fans will not forget anytime soon. His name is associated with
bias within his own team, with last-race crashes, with those awful startline
manoeuvres, with the win-at-all costs mentality that puts safety and
fans a distant second.
"I don't care about records, maybe they'll
be nice to look back at one day when I am retired, but now I want
to win," the German has said on numerous occasions.
But his actions suggest different. His actions
suggest that the records are all-important. For Schumacher's sake
I hope that is true, because when it is all over the records may be all
he has.

1990 MACAU - CONTROVERSIAL BEGINNINGS - Throughout
the race Hakkinen stayed right behind the German, and overall had
an obvious speed advantage. Hakkinen only needed to finish within
3 seconds to Schumacher to win on aggregate time. Coming up to the final
lap Schumacher made a mistake and Hakkinen was right on his gearbox
as they entered the start/finish straight Hakkinen attempted to pass.
Schumacher did not want this, as finishing second wasn't good enough for
him. So the German swerved to block the Fin, but it was to late the two
cars made contact Hakkinen span into the barrier . Schumacher cruised
home to victory as his car was damaged from the smash.
Schumacher was Crowned F3 World Champion,
and you could tell from Hakkinen's body language he was not happy
In the press conference Schumacher blamed
Hakkinen for trying to pass him!?
This incident was soon forgotten and
Schumacher got a seat in F1. To Hakkinen's credit the Fin also got a
seat in F1, just not as good as the Germans team.
1994. ADELAIDE - On lap 36 Schumacher
had pulled out a three second gap over Hill, but the pressure got
to him. The German made an unforced error running wide at the turn
running onto the grass verge and rubbing the tyre wall. Schumacher
was most likely going to have to make a pit stop for fresh rubber.
As the German rejoined the track Hill
was gaining all the time and got right behind the Benetton. Schumacher
stricken at his near miss with the wall, was moving a lot slower than
the Williams, but as Hill went to make a move on the outside, the damaged
Benetton weaved
across to block the path.
The door now wide open on the inside
Hill used his speed advantage to move into the space,
just as he went to move into the turn Schumacher cut back across the
track, flying over the wishbone of Hill's Williams.
Schumacher landed with a bump into the
tyre wall, he wasn't going to get away with this one, the German was
out of the race.
Hill battle on to the pits, but his wishbone
was bent immobilising his handling. He was being caught and past by
the top six. In the pits there was nothing the team could do Hill retired
from the damage caused in the collision.
In 1995 Michael Schumacher has
crashed Damon Hill's car TWO times (Silverstone and
Monza). Both times Michael claimed that it wasn't his fault.
In Austria (Zeltweg) Michael showed that
he has a blindness for any kind of flag. He overtook HH Frentzen
while officials were waving yellow flags. In 1994 (Silverstone)
people thought that it was a mistake when he ignored the black flag.
In San Marino he finished second behind
Heinz-Harald Frentzen, but on the victory lap, Michael overtook
Heinz-Harald so that the audience thought that Michael had won the race
.
1997. JEREZ - Lap 48: At this
moment Villeneuve was faster than Michael and he tried to outbreak
him. Michael saw this in his mirror and knew that IF Villeneuve would
overtake him he surely lost the race for the title. So he opened
his "big" trickbox and used the same stunt as in Adelaide 1994.
Only this time Villeneuve got away with
minor scratches on the left sidepod, and Michael has broken his front
wheel suspension.
...As Schumacher's Ferrari bounced off Villeneuve's
Williams and slid into the gravel, Michael had only himself to blame.
There was no sympathy for him in the paddock. He had damaged his reputation
considerably. If this is the best racing driver on earth, they said, why
does he need to resort to such unsportsmanlike behavior? He may
be a great driver but he will never be a good sportsman...

Michael Schumacher drives dirty.
He was the most penalized driver in 1998. For that matter, he was
the ONLY driver in 1998 to suffer any penalties at all. And he had lots
of them. Take Montreal 1998 for example. When he came out of the pits,
he clearly forced Frentzen off the track. In the post-race interviews,
Schumacher said he "never saw Frentzen." Okay, so Schumacher is
a LIAR too. I rewound the tape and watched that moment again. I watched
it in super slo-mo, and it was apparent to me that there was no way
that Schumacher could not have seen Frentzen coming along. The only
way was if Schumacher was incompetent, and we all know he's not. His
comments in the interview were clearly a bald-faced lie.
Belgium Grand prix 1998 Following the high speed crash
between Coulthard and himself, Schumacher felt that he needed to
get his feelings heard immediately. He races down the pit lane confusing
everyone, what's he up to? Schumacher's engineer tries to calm him down
and take him back to the Ferrari garage.Schumacher has other ideas and
removes his helmet to make it a clean fight. Then he elbows his race engineer
out of the way. He's in the McLaren garage and ready
to give DC a slap. Coulthard comes out ready to explain, but Schumacher
doesn't seem to want to talk. Coulthard's henchman removes Schumacher
from the garage and Ferrari team boss John Todt persuades Schumacher to
leave. Probably realizing how stupid he looks, Schumacher makes the long
walk back to the Ferrari garage. Later he said that David
Coulthard had tried to kill him!
Magny Cours 2000. - It took until lap 34 before
David was close enough to have a try at passing the Ferrari to take
the lead. David concluded that the best way to challenge was around
the outside which, when you are dealing with Michael Schumacher is
perhaps not such a good idea. Michael has slightly different views
than others on what is permissible and what is not. David was alongside
the Ferrari as they went into the corner and Michael let his car drift
out as we knew he would. Coulthard had to lift off to avoid an accident.
He was not amused and made a series of irate gestures.
"To me Schumacher's victory means
nothing. I expect at the end it's the glorious Ferrari team and not
an insolent overpaid little Bavarian boy that has won the world title."
Francesco Cossiga, the former president
of Italy, commenting on Schumacher's 2000 world championship win
2002. AUSTRIA - "If you win a race, even if it's a
way you don't like, be a man take the top step and take the trophy,".
"Even if you are embarrassed and everyone is booing you, he accepted
taking the win. He didn't slow down. "He felt good about it; he waved
his hand on the last lap with everyone booing. He should have stepped
up there, taken the trophy and been a man." Jacques Villeneuve
Mihael Schumacher is married to Corinna Betsch. Corinna
was Heinz-Harald Frentzen's girlfriend until 1991 for more than four
years. Not long after Corinna split with Heinz-Harald she joined up
with Michael.
