CASIO VL-TONE

Open Your Heart
This is what started it all off really - a glorified calculator! Paul got this for Christmas one year and wouldn't let Alan play with it! Examples of this instrument (?) can be heard on "Da Da Da" by Trio and "Open Your Heart" by The Human League.

ROLAND SH101 MONOPHONIC SYNTH

BASS!
This was The End's Bass player! A Roland SH101. This was triggered to a drum machine and provided instant bass-lines... if you remembered to program it before each song that is! One day, Alan got fed up with doing everything, so Baz took over operating the bass lines and drum machines. Later on Paul did the honours - notably at the Norwich University gig.

ROLAND JUNO 106 SYNTH

Juno 106
This is the first synthesizer Alan had - A Roland Juno 106. Martin also bought one of these a bit later on.
Original Advert for the Juno 106

YAMAHA CS01

Tiny Keyboard
Paul's miniature synth, this had fairly similar sounds to the Roland SH101.

CASIO CZ1000 SYNTH

Martin's First Keyboard
This is the first synth that Martin bought. It was a total pain to use - it was nigh-on impossible to suss out how to make up your own sounds! He didn't have this long - he bought a Juno 106 from someone in a band called New England.

CASIO SK1 SAMPLER

Can I Have A Sample Please
At the time, this was the world's smallest and CHEAPEST sampler, and it probably still is!!! Baz had to load the sample via a walkman before he could play it. It was only used on one song - In Two Minds - was it worth it? Yes! This was great fun down the pub where they would sample their voices and then play it up and down the keyboard, much to the amusement of the assembled drunks! The above picture is actual size... just kidding!!

ROLAND S10

Sampler
The first "proper" sampler - the first one which wouldn't fit in your pocket anyway! This had a full 12 seconds sampling!! Even answerphones have larger memory than that nowerdays! You could also load up samples from Quick Disc. This was used on some early tracks such as Set Me Free, Night Thoughts and Twelve Inch Version.

YAMAHA DX11 SYNTH

A Small Prezzie
This was a Christmas present to Alan from his brother Paul - generous boy! When Baz took over on Bass (SH101), Alan played this in tandem with Juno 106 at gigs. No he's not ambedextrous - he can't even spell it!! He's kept hold of this keyboard though!
