Will Parry: a boy from Winchester, England in our world who finds out he is the new bearer of the Subtle Knife after he runs away from home because he has murdered someone.

Fra Pavel: one of the Church's alethiometer readers. His daemon is a frog.

Serafina Pekkala: Queen of a witch clan in the region of Lake Enara. She owes a debt to Farder Coram for saving her life. Her daemon is a snow goose named Kaisa.

Iofur Raknison: the king of the armored bears of Svalbard. A vain and foolish ruler who builds an ornate marble palace in an effort to become more like humans. Iofur longs to have his daemon. His desire to be something he is not is what leds to his downfall.

Lord Roke: Gallivespian spy-captain to Lord Asriel. His agents the Lady Alamkia and Chevalier Tialys are sent to protect Lyra and Will and ultimately help to guide them through the World of the Dead.

Sattamax: Mulefa Elder who describes the inexplicable demise of the Seed Pod trees and enlists Mary to help his people find the cause and solution to their dire situation.

Lee Scoresby: Texan aeronaut who uses his balloon to help Lyra. His deamon is a hare named Hester.

Ruta Skadi: Queen of the Latvian witches who joins Lord Asriel's side.

Thorold: Lord Asriel's manservant.

Xaphania: the wisest of the Angels, she was banished by the Authority for finding out the truth about him. The rebel Angels including Balthamos and Baruch serve her.
