Gimli, son of Gloin, of Durin's line, it's the dwarf who was chosen in Rivendell to rapresent the dwarves in the Company of the Ring, to escort Frodo towards the east.
I must admit that dwarves, especially if we consider the imaginary world of "The Lord of the Rings", are characters who fascinate me a lot.
Probably the first reason is due to the fact that dwarves have been always associated to the mountains, their favoured enviroment, and the mountains occupys an important place in my heart. They are grandiose, majestic, misterious, wild, and they exerts a strong attraction over myself.
Some friends of mine found the atmosphere of the drawing too much dark and disquieting, but I think the figure is suitable for Gimli.
Probably many people can note that the face doesn't reflect the stereotype diffused between the illustratorrs of fantasy and not only, for example the big nose, nevertheless Tolkien doesn't describe the dwarves properly in this way, so I've chosen the approach of the illustrator Alan Lee providing the dwarf with a face not too much deformed or grotesque.
