Louis VIII, by name LOUIS THE LION, or THE LION-HEART, French LOUIS LE LION, or
LOUIS COEUR-DE-LION. Capetain King of France from 1223 who spent most of his
short reign establishing royal power in Poitou and Languedoc.

On May 23, 1200, Louis marred Blanche of Castile, daughter of Alfonso VIII of
Castile, who effectively acted as regent after Louis's death. In 1212 Louis
seized Saint-Omer and Aire to prevent a powerful Flanders from being on the
flank of his county of Artois. In 1216, after the Barons rebelling against King
John of England had offered the English throne to Louis in return for his aid,
Louis went to England to aid the rebels. Initially he was successful, but
eventually he was defeated at sea and suffered defections. In 1217, when peace
was concluded at Kingston, Louis was secretly paid 10,000 marks. In 1224, now
King, he seized Poitou and, in 1226, he launched a successful crusade against
the Albigensian heretics, capturing the major fortress of Avignon before
returning toward Paris because of illness.

Louis was the first Capetain to grant appanages on a large scale and to have a
reversion clause that made alienation of royal property more difficult. Louis
also developed other particular rights for the Kingship, such as the concept
that fealty was sworn not only to the individual King but also to the Kingship.
His eldest son, Louis XI (atherward St. Louis), peacefully succeeded him while
his other sons received appanages.

Auvergne---- planning region (French region de programme), encompassing the
central French departements of Alier, Puy-de-Dome, Cantal, and Haute-Loire. The
captial is Clermont-Ferrand. The region has an area of 10,034 sq mi (25,988 sq
km) and is bounded by the departements of Cher and Nievre to the north,
Saone-et-Loire to the east, Lozere and Aveyron to the south, Lot to the
southwest, and Correze and Creuse to the west. The following article summarizes
the political history, geography, demographic patterns, and economy of modern
Auvergne; for additional treatment of its geography and history, see
MACROPAEDIA: France. The Arverni, a powerful confederation under the chieftain
Vercingetorix, inhabited the region during Julius Caesar's time; later the
Romans made Arvernia part of Aquitania Prima. After 913 the viscounts of
Clermont (now Clermont-Ferrand) adopted the hereditary title of Counts of
Auvergne. In the countships developed in the region: the Dauphine d'Auvergne,
the Terre d'Auvergne, and the espiscopal countship of Clermont. Charles, duc de
Bourbon, united the Terre d'Auvergne and the Dauphine d'Auvergne in 1503; these
Bourbon domains were later confiscated by King Francis I, who gave them to his
mother, Louise of Savoy, for the rest of her life, after which they were annexed
to the kingdom of France (1532). The countship of Auvergne, having passed in
1422 to THE HOUSE OF LA TOUR, descended to CATHERINE DE MEDICI, who also got
possession of CLERMONT in 1551. These domains were annexed to the crown by 1610.
