Death 1485

Alexander Stewart, Duke of Albany --- also called (1455--c. 1458) EARL OF MARCH (b. c. 1454----d. 1485, FRANCE), second son of James II of Scotland, created Duke of Albany in or before 1458. Both he and John, Earl of Mar, quarrelled with their brother James III, who imprisoned them in 1476. Mar died, but Albany escaped to carry on a series of intrigues with the ENGLISH, who supported his pretensions to the SCOTTISH crown. Although he returned to favour and was Lieutenant General of the realm during the winter of 1482--1483, he was attained in 1483 and defeated in another rising in 1484. Escaping to FRANCE, he died there the following year.

THISTLE -- The prickly thistle, with its accompanying motto, Nemo me impune lacessit ("No one provokes me with impunity"), is the national emblem of SCOTLAND. It is a symbol of defiance and of a willingness to defend SCOTLAND. According to legend, in the eighth century the Scots were alerted to an imminent Danish attack when one of the barefooted Norsemen trod on a thistle and yelped with pain; as a result, the invaders were successfully routed. The thistle was officially adopted as the SCOTTISH emblem during the reign of James III Stuart, King of Scotland (1451-1488) and later also appeared in the British Royal Arms. The British Order of the Thistle is an important order of chivalry. In Christian analogy, however, the thistle is equated with both the Crown of Thorns and the fall of man, thus representing sorrow and sin. SCOTLAND is also symbolized by the sporran and kilt (the kilt's tartan pattern further identifies membership of a clan) and by the bagpipes.
