On December 28, President Al Mamoun of East El-Hussaq finally responded to the unanimously-backed Forum Resolution 17 calling on his country to disarm in Occidentale province.
In his statement (to read, click here), the President ordered the dismantling of the military installation. However, with an unmistakeable overtone of bitterness, he also initiated a national campaign of treaty burning to symbolize not only his dissatisfaction with Forum Resolution 17, but more importantly his decision to break the Riksholm Treaty.
The news sent Congressional Parliament into a frenzy. Al Mamoun's decision could not have come at a worst time for the Secretary-General. CP has been closed for holidays since December 20 and the Secretary-General is rumored to be at a secret conference with his close group of advisors putting the final touches on his abdication supposedly on January 4, 2004 so that a new head of CP may be elected.
However, with his statement (to read, click here) released to the media on December 29, that appears very unlikely since a new round of Neorikspolitik negotiations has been called for January 2004. Interest in these talks has reportedly been extremely disappointing.
In the meantime, Congressional Parliament's call for restraint by both sides - the enforcers and adherents of the Riksholm Treaty - has been heeded. With patience (and just plain apathy), this potential crisis appears to have been successfully averted for the time being.
