Confederacy Signs Peace Treaty
After weeks of frustrating and slow negotiations, a formal end has come to hostilities in the general war between the Phoenix Confederacy and the United Commonwealth of Lindsholm & Phalanx Treaty Organization. The actual war, dubbed "The War of Brumaire", was fast and furious, resulting in the involvement of all Great Powers and the unofficial defeat of the Phoenix Confederacy.
On many occasions, peace talks faltered as both sides demanded compensation. The Confederacy argued that had the PTO not intervened, they would have won the war against the UCL. The PTO/UCL, now the Platinum Nexus, argued that the Confederacy lost the war and had no right to demand any compensation whatsoever. At one point, the PTO/UCL was five minutes away from launching a surprise attack which would have continued the war.
As negotiations dragged on, both sides agreed that no transfer of existing territory would be carried out. In return, however, the Nexus sought to rectify the wrongs of the Confederacy through other means, including military limitations and political reforms as seen in The Riksholm Treaty.
The Confederacy at first resisted, with the charge being led by President El Cid II of El-Hussaq. Enraged, at one point the President was determined to attack the PTO/UCL unilaterally but eventually decided against the action. The fury, however, was mutual, and with each passing day, the Prime Chancellor of Marcusburg grew more militant, infuriated by the Confederacy's insolence.
War remained a real possibility during the two weeks in which negotiations were held. Finally, a breakthrough in peace talks arrived when the Ethnarch of Rattanjeetland personally replaced El Cid II as head negotiator for the Confederacy. A dejected El Cid resigned and was replaced by the leader of the opposition, Aladdin.
The Ethnarch was willing to compromise with the Supreme Viceroy of Lindsholm and the Prime Chancellor of Marcusburg. Negotiations proceeded and by the end of the week, an agreement had been reached. Formal documents were prepared and under pressure from the Supreme Viceroy and the Ethnarch, all member-states of the Confederacy signed the peace treaty at the Riksholm, the Lindsholm parliament, on January 26, 2001.
It is expected that the peace treaty shall be signed by the Supreme Viceroy and the Prime Chancellor, along with remaining Nexus nations in the days to come. Until then, discontent remains high. The new El-Hussaqi head of state is enraged at the peace terms, much like his predecessor. At one point, President Aladdin even refused to sign the document. Other Confederate nations signed the document with much less resistance, but were reluctant nevertheless. Rumors from the Foreign Office in Marcusburg indicate that the Prime Chancellor believes that the Riksholm Treaty is too lenient.
