The Notables is a singing society which performs concerts in the El Segundo area. The purpose (mission statement) of The Notables is "To provide a service of vocal entertainment to the community and to provide an opportunity for qualified singers to participate in an organization dedicated to the vocal arts."
The Notables was founded in 1978 by employees at Hughes Aircraft Company's El Segundo plant as the Hughes Aircraft El Segundo Employees Association (HESEA) Choir. In 1981, Randy Schwalbe joined the choir as director. The choir performed quarterly in building R1 auditorium; generally, a concert in December of seasonal music, in March of classical music, in June of show or folk music, and in September a concert consisting of solos and small ensembles. Also, in December and June, the group performed a concert at the Joslyn Center in El Segundo.
In 1984 the name "The Hughes Notables" was chosen. In 1997, after much debate, the Hughes Notables voted to become independent of Hughes Aircraft Company, and became known as "The Notables".
The Notables belong to the El Segundo Chamber of Commerce, and perform concerts (usually twice yearly) at Johnson Hall at El Segundo United Methodist Church, twice yearly at the Joslyn Center in El Segundo, and various other times. Watch this web site for announcements.
Past performances have included: singing the national anthem at Dodger Stadium (1991), singing in the annual "holiday" concert (1992) at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion at the Los Angeles Music Center, at various Army and Air Force functions, Juvenile Hall in LA, at a jamboree at Warner Brothers Studios (1994), and a fully-staged production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
