'Twas the night of All Hallow's
the moon gave full light
the creatures came out
to stalk the clear night
The children lay hiding
under warm, wool blankets
peering out often
to check under the bed
The priestess lay sleeping
the priest was worn, too
It was a fine rite
held by craft good and true
The goddess was smiling
she bid the god life
He lay down for winter
and the passage of night
Trolls came out quietly
from under the pass
The fauns tred wood paths
by a stream made of glass
The trees did a last dance
before their long rest
the goblins did grin
they had passed a great test
They sought the traveller
who wandered by night
who had not the sense
to bring with them some light
But dawn comes so quickly
with much left undone
mischief unfinished
not enough time for fun
In the sun's rising light
the dead return home
The ghosts circle graves
the earth is quite warm
The lantern has gone out
the pumpkin is cold
The sweets are by beds
for the children to hold.
