Monks was originally named Edward Leeford, the much older half-brother of Oliver and the most unlucky son of Edwin's wretched first marriage which he consequently ran away from. Edward was run over by a carriage as a child and suffers from being epeleptic causing him to have violent seizures whenever he is overly excited. Imagine a boy as innocent as Oliver but miserably oppressed by his disease and under the direct influence of his truly evil and manipulative mother who murders his father right before his eyes. These things and all the other wretched things that come with them are what makes his life such a miserable experience for him and which flavor how he acts and who he is. In the books they create the clear image of a black villain who is trying to steal Oliver's inheritance. In the mini series he has the same sort of innocence that Oliver possesses along with the evil tenancies that his mother has passed to him. People posses very negative feelings around him, especially his extended family. In most every way he is a very depraved person. In the end of the book Monks does not change from his villainous self and dies in a distant country from his disease. In the mini series Edward overcomes his mother's acid presence and most of his own large insecurities, moves to another country to live on the money originally left him, which was the lest of his problems in the beginning, gets a wife and has a baby on the way. (In the mini series Monks is played by Marc Warren and he brought the character to life. He. Could. Be. Real. :) Really, his performance is captivating and brings Monks straight to life in a very real way.
