Walter Thomas Smith, son of James Smith, was born on May 16th 1851. In his early adulthood, at least, he was a labourer.
He married Lucy Deane at Trinity Church on December 29th 1879 in Adelaide, South Australia at 28 years of age, the daughter of Alexander Charles Deane. At this time his occupation was given as sail maker.
Walter, at 30 years of age and Lucy Deane, at 22 years of age became the parents of James Smith on October 11th, 1881 in Adelaide. He was one of five children born to them. On his son's death certificate his occupation was given as a sea captain by his grand-daughter's husband, Frank Hocken. Walter and Lucy had the following children:
