RELAY FOR LIFE...

She moved from Connecticut to Texas to marry me in 1979 after a six month, long distance romance. I never knew a telephone bill could reach four digits until I met Lori, and I have no doubt that we personally boosted American Airlines stock significantly that year. We often joked that we had to get married because we couldn't afford not to. The phone bills alone were keeping us near the poverty line. But what a rich marriage it was! Almost 20 years later as she lay dying, she was still joking, still delivering well-timed wisecracks, and trying hard to make the ordeal easier on everyone. The day the doctors told her there was nothing more they could do, they were astonished to find their patient spending her energy consoling them! That was the kind of person she was. Ten days later her life was over-- a remarkable school teacher, wonderful mother and perfect partner, dead at 45.

Cancer is a hideous scourge, a destroyer of dreams. And it strikes indiscriminately; men, women and children of every race and background. Although tremendous strides are being made, the statistics are still sobering: This year approximately 564,800 Americans are expected to die from cancer -- more than 1500 people a day.

No organization has done more to further the cause of cancer awareness and cancer research than the American Cancer Society. And one of the organization's chief fund raisers is the annual Relay For Life, an overnight team event held every spring. The 2000 Arlington/Mansfield Relay For Life will be held at the Mansfield High School North Campus, 1071 W. Turner-Warnell in Mansfield, June 9 & 10.

Relay for Life is a celebration that brings a community together to fight the disease with teams walking or running on an outdoor track to raise money for cancer research. The event includes food, entertainment, fun and games, a cancer survivor lap and a moving candle lighting ceremony. If you, your organization, company, or church group would like to participate in the fun, contact the American Cancer Society office at (817) 737-9990. Be a part of this important Arlington event!
