Sakura is raised by her guardian, Genta, as an innocent country girl. But at age thirteen she is summoned to Kyoto by the handsome Lord Mitsuhide and shocked to learn of her true identity as a princess. Groomed to become a proper lady, she endures the boring court life, relieved only by her training in the martial arts.

Sakura’s heart is stirred by Mitsuhide, but she accedes to his sense of duty - that they serve only to help her cousin, Prince Kai, ascend the throne as Divine Ruler. To protect her amidst the political intrigues and evil ambitions of a conspiratorial nobility, Mitsuhide instructs Sakura to disguise herself as Sakuzo, a fictional brother.

As Sakuzo, the princess is forced to prove loyalty to Prince Kai by assassinating an enemy general. The result is a coveted invitation to meet the Prince. He is infatuated by the young Sakuzo, and arranges a private rendezvous. Sakuzo resists the Prince’s advances and is forced to reveal the truth - she is the Prince’s long-lost cousin, Sakura! The enraged Kai insults her father, Fujiura, and heaps scorn on her mother, the Princess Hana.

Sakura, caught on the same wheel of Fate, slays Prince Kai, and flees to join Mitsuhide. Pursued by the conspirators, the couple nonetheless declares their love and wed. With Genta, they pledge to shatter the nobles’ villainous plot to seize the throne.

Their success has a terrible price. Only Sakura still lives. Standing alone, she vows to live her life fighting for the cause of justice. A destiny as befits the daughter of The Bandit Princess.

LEGENDS OF THE BANDIT PRINCESS is project sponsored by the New York Foundation for the Arts.
