Darkness

a creeking noise
stirred the house.
the cat looked up
from his mouse.

the darkness grew
to a hue so deep,
even the dog
awoke from sleep.

a cold wind blew
from an open window,
and made the man shiver
from head to toe.

he awoke with a start,
along with his wife,
from a horrible dream
of some terrible strife.

he shuddered, sat up,
got out of bed.
a light came on, 
the darkness fled.
