The Sugar Act

The Sugar Act was a bill which was meant for the increase of income via taxes on sugar, as well as molasses and other goods made from that product. The act was set forth by Grenville, the British Prime Minister of the time (see gbpretroubles), in responce to the financial losses created by French and Indian Wars. Grenville's 'reason' for enacting the taxation was that the colonies had to pay for their protection.

The colonies complained about this tax alike all other taxes, however, another act created by parliament (banning paper money) created an economic depression in addition to the one created by the wars. Grenville later nullified this act to put forth the stamp act; a bill which would yield more money.
