The Sons Of Liberty

The Son's of Liberty was a radical group that has been shrouded in mystery for quite a while. They made sure not to reveal their identities because the actions that they took against the British crown were viewed as treasonous and punishable by death! Very little is known about them becuase of this.

The Son's of Liberty was not a group stationed in just one city of the nation. There were many chapters around the small, yet turbulent country. Among the most popular was the New York City and Boston chapters. They were comprised of mainly middle class white men who felt that a great injustice was being done by the British onto their fair land. Some of the more famous members included Samuel Adams and Paul Revere. These Sons, as well as others, weren't about to sit around and watch their country become a play-thing for Britain. They took action.

They had specific political views on what was going on in America at their time. The members believed that Britian was forcing unjust and unconstitutional taxes upon the New World. Such taxes were the Stamp Act, the Sugar Act, and the infamous Tea Act. Each of these taxes placed more of a burden on the citizens of America.

There were those in America who did oppose the ideals of the Sons of Liberty, however. One such man was Thomas Hutchinson, the governor of Massachusetts at the time. Despite being the governor for the state, he went against the wishes of the people, siding with the crown instead of the resistance. His ideas and beliefs were the main factor for the Boston Tea Party! He was the one who ordered that the tea ships stay and unloaded, instead of held for ransom until the the Tea Act was lifted, like the public wanted. In an act of defiance and frustration towards Governor Hutchinson, an angry mob containing Sons of Liberty and citizens of Boston rioted and eventually burned down his house.
