Pictures from Belgium. From my visit at the beginning of December 2002. I went chiefly for a conference but I managed a bit of sightseeing before I got too cold.
The Cathedral in Antwerp, well its spire. My camera is too small to capture it all! The town hall in Antwerp. Really quite impressive. Antwerp is after all the diamond capital of the world and the fourth biggest port in the world (Rotterdam, Hong Kong and Singapore are first, second and third). The statue in the foreground depicts the legendary foundings of the city-it shows a young Roman ready to throw the recently dismembered hand of an evil money grabbing giant that lived in the castle/tax house at the port. Nice. This used to be one of the busiest ports in the world, until the ships outgrew it and now Antwerp port is slightly downstream. Antwerp's most internationally famous son is P.P. Rubens. This is a church he designed. The Cathedral in Brussels. Just one of many impressive churches in the capital. It is more impressive in reality, really very large! The Grand Place ot Grote Markt in Brussels. Another view of the Grand Place. There was a Christmas Market taking place and the most amusing Christmas decorations including luminescent sheep and cows(?!). Mannekin Pis. According to the guide books, it is Brussels' most famous sight. I walked past it three times before finally spotting it. The picture is a bit shaky since I was laughing pretty hard. Just to show how sunny it was I took this picture of the Belgium Parliament from a park. |
