BIG JOHN SNAPS FOUR YEAR DROUGHT WITH WIN AT CHALLENGE. On a sweltering day when multiple provisionals were the rule, John kept his cool and kept his ball in play. With net scores ranging as high as 95, John was the only player to score in the 70s posting a net 79. "I knew John was playing well because I saw him in the middle of the fairway every time I looked back" commented one player. Check out the complete recap at the 1999 Challenge Page.
Tree Links is the kind of course that does not forgive errant golf shots. You might survive the front nine, but hitting the ball toward the edges of the fairway will catch up to you on the closing nine, especially from 13 on. The 1999 Challenge was no exception. There was a scant 5 strokes separating the entire field after the front nine, but the spread grew to 30 strokes after 18.
Courses are selected for the Challenge based on one criterum: resistance to scoring. The best you can do is to minimize the cost of the errant shots you hit. At the end of the day, John had the fewest big holes. It's all about patience. Congratulations on the win John.
The leader board at the end of the day read like this (yes, those are net scores):
Scott B | Vince R | John K | Jeff Mc | Tom K | Bob H | Scott K | Brian C | Bill J | Richard J |
15 | 16 | 16 | 17 | 17 | 18 | 19 | 20 | 21 | 22 |
