Steve Captures Championship, Second 2004 Title

2004 Club Champion Steve HawleySteve Hawley made a decisive par on the 36th hole of the 2004 CMGC Club Championship to claim his first major victory and second title of the 2004 golf season. After a frustrating second place finish on the same course in the 2003 Championship, Steve exercised the demons and played his final round in just 80 strokes.

To say that the Players Club, host of the 2004 GMCG Club Championship, provided a stern test of golf does not begin to do justice to the challenges of this course, but the highest winning net score in the celebrated thirteen year history of the CMGC may offer some insight. The winning score of 147 is the highest by six strokes. Despite the severe challenge of The Three Holes, this championship came down to the the last one. Richard was the overnight leader at net 67; before handicaps, Jeff, Scott B. and Steve were 6, 7 and 11 strokes back respectively. Standing on the 36th tee, any of the four members in the leaders' group could have won the event. Richard made triple bogey from the creek, Jeff made double bogey off a rock and out of the back creek, Scott made a routine bogey from short of the bunker, and Steve's performance under pressure produced a regulation par. Congratulations Steve.

This victory put a final nail in the coffin of the Handicap System controversy that has raged since 2002. A sweep by lower handicappers doused complaints of bias in the 100 year old USGA Handicap System. Steve was the low handicap in Myrtle Beach and topped the money list. Jeff won his 5th Lobsterfest as the third lowest handicap. Steve won the 2004 Challenge as the low handicap. John snapped his 5 year drought at the 2004 Summer Heat with the second lowest handicap. Our esteemed Handicap Chairman observed that "the handicap system really allowed golfers of varying ability compete right down to the final putt." I'm sure we're all glad that's over.
