Tom Captures 1st Championship

Past Club Champion Vince passes the plaque to TomIt took seven long weeks, longer hopefully than the Florida election, but the 2000 CMGC Club Champion has finally been crowned. When it came down to the closing holes, Tom made the shots and beat the tightest field in CMGC history by making pars on 26 and 27 to keep the challengers at bay. The top five finishers were separated by only five strokes after the 27 hole marathon.

The spread in Course Handicap for this tournament (10) was wider than the spread in finishing scores (5). It was a day when anyone could have won and most nearly did. Runner up Scott B. did not recover from a quadruple bogey 8 on

the 20th hole. Third place finisher Jeff posted double, quad, quad on the closing three holes. Scott K. also tied for third in part to an 8-7-7-10 run on the challenging 15-18. Vince shot himself in the foot at the second turn with an 8-10 combo. Even Tom tried to give the tournament away with an 8-10 combo on the 24th and 25th holes. Two "competitors" dropped out after 18 holes of play after posting Xs on a hole. One never even made it out of bed. At the end of the day, only one man took the fewest strokes and earned the championship plaque for 2000.

Tom's victory completes his career CMGC Slam by adding to his 1994 Lobsterfest title. It also caps off a remarkable season punctuated by a Handicap Index that fell completely out of the teens on its was down to 12.7. Tom's play resulted in two wins that broke a three year drought. Congratulations on your first Club Championship and a fine season.

Tee times and pairings for the first round of this year's championship were established using Tom's Everyone Is A Diamond method. Please review your tee time and course handicap information in the table at right. The first number is the Course Handicap; the August 2000 Handicap Indices are in parentheses.

While not formally discussed, the tournament within the tournament will resume this week. Vince and Jeff playing Ping will be seeking revenge for their Lobsterfest loss to the Titleist team of Tom and John. The wager will be the same 36 hole combined net score for five bucks. Other entrants are welcome to join the fray should they meet both the challenge and the requirements.

The 2000 Champion's Banquet begins at 5:00 pm on Saturday and will be hosted by Richard and Suzi. This year promises to be the most extravagant Champion's Banquet in the history of the CMGC. In a break from tradition, the banquet will be held on Saturday night instead of the usual Sunday afternoon slot. Please review your food assignment and direct questions or comments to our Social Director.
