Bob Captures Heat In Record Style

On a weekend that saw dominant players run away with major championships, Bob posted a net 63 and ran away from the rest of the 2000 Summer Heat field. Sharing more in common with Tiger Woods than just his Nike logo wear, Bob took the tournament is style by setting a new CMGC record for the lowest tournament winning gross score at 79. Bob stayed out of trouble and leaned on his strength by making several clutch putts. "He was in control the whole time" observed one competitor.

Facetiously retitled the Summer Breeze by our esteemed CFO, the 2000 version of this summer classic did not even see the 80s. Instead, the tournament weather was cool and breezy. Perhaps too much emphasis was placed on course selection and special cart rules. With those provision in place, perhaps Mother Nature felt we had our bases covered and did not need a really hot day. Sorry to mislead you, Mom.

Here's how the leaderboard shook out.
  1. BH: 79, net 63
  2. SB: 82, net 66
  3. SK: 89, net 69
  4. SH: 80, net 71
  5. TK: 85, net 71
  6. JK: 89, net 72
  7. VR: 92, net 75
  8. RJ: 97, net 79
  9. JMc: 105, net 89

Summer Heats Finds New Venue

2000 Summer Heat Tee Times Start at 2:02 pm, contact the Summer Heat Chairman for remaining spot information...

Where better to experience the heat of summer than at the Summer Heat, during the heat of the day, atop a treeless methane-belching land fill? That's right, the CMGC will christen The Pheonix at this year's Summer Heat on July 22nd. Since The Phoenix requires carts on weekends before 2:00, and since the premise of this tournament is to test one's skills amid the heat and challenges of summer, the 2000 Summer Heat will be an afternoon event. Protect yourself from heat stressSome enjoy the heat of summer more than others. Remember Venturi's US Open win at Congressional? Ken should have eaten some Cheesy-Poofs and drank Gatorade. Heat Stress is nothing to smirk about because it can kill you without proper precautions. That said, it can be done. How do you suppost marathon runners survive? How can Tour pros walk 72 holes in 4 straight hot, muggy midwestern days? Smart preparation is the key: stay well hydrated and replenish sodium lost through with salty snacks like gorp or Cheesy-Poofs. Read more about it at the Garland, Texas website.

Another interesting twist to this event is a new cart penalty. While no one believes that golf carts speed play, everyone believes that they offer players who ride a distinct advantage over those who walk and carry. Okay, everyone might be a slight overstatement. How about "nearly every golfer?" Read about one prominent member's dissenting view here. Despite the dissention, there will be a two stroke per side penalty for those wishing to take advantage of the endurance benefits of riding in a cart. One member, after recently observed the contrast between riding and walking on the hills of Tree Links, said "four strokes is not enough!"
