| Synopsis This is another blockbuster drama with a powerful cast. The main stars are Felix Wong, Gallen Law, Amy Kwok, Kathy Chow, Sunny Chan, Jessica Hsuen, Paul Chun, Ada Choi, Eileen Yeow and Nick Cheung. The story begins with Amy as the eldest daughter, Kathy in the middle with Sunny as the youngest and the only son. For no particular, the mom hates Sunny with a passion. She's always nagging at Sunny over the smallest thing. Amy and Kathy try to protect their brother again their mom's hurtful words. Gallen plays a unique character. He's not very likeable. In Canada, Eileen (Gallen's fiancée) and she sold her family business to pay off Gallen's gambling debts. He runs away and goes back to Hong Kong in shame but doesn't change his ways. Gallen becomes Amy's neighbor and proceed to cheat her out of her money. Amy's fiancé breaks up with her and she is destitute. Gallen's there to comfort her and it turns out he's not all bad. They become friends. Sunny and Kathy works for an airline agency. Their co-worker is Ada and Sunny is head over heels in love with her but Ada is very materialistic and only has eyes for rich men. Nick is from a well-off family (Paul's son) and befriends Sunny. He meets Ada through Sunny and asks her out. Nick and Ada start dating while Sunny and Ada become closer friends. Kathy meets Felix at the airport and that's how Felix meets Amy. He offers her a job as his secretary. Felix is Paul's younger brother and they had a falling out. His brother wants Felix to come back to the family business but Felix wants to have his own business. Paul did some dirty work and caused Felix to go out of business. During this crisis, Felix begins to have feelings for Amy because she stood by him and supported him. Alas, Amy doesn't like Felix because she likes Gallen. Just when Amy and Gallen were about to get together, Eileen comes to Hong Kong to find Gallen. She has cancer and wanted to see him one last time. Gallen, after finding out how much Eileen had sacrifice for him, gets back with Eileen to make her last days happy. Gallen, Amy and Eileen go back to Canada where Eileen sadly passed away. Amy and Gallen realized that Eileen would always be between them so they decided on a mutual breakup even though they're both still interested in each other. Meanwhile, Kathy had since fallen for Felix. Felix thought that Amy and Gallen were together and had no chance with Amy, the next best thing would be to date her sister. Little did he know that Amy and Gallen didn't end up together so Felix broke things off with Kathy to pursue Amy (the one he really loves). After many attempts, Felix was successful in chasing Amy. Gallen, sad by this fact, determines to prove himself by working hard. He wants to be the kind of man Amy and Eileen would be proud of. He grovels himself and went to work for Felix. Poor Kathy was left out in the cold with a baby on the way. She kept the secret quiet because she doesn't want to ruin her sister's happiness nor cause pain for the man she loves. Another big love quadrangle going on is between Sunny, Ada, Nick and Jessica. Jessica is Sunny's boss and doesn't really like him due to a misunderstanding. Sunny only has eyes for Ada but since she is taken with Nick, settles for friendship. Soon, Jessica falls for Sunny and begins to date him. However, he still loves Ada so never really paid much attention to Jessica. Meanwhile, Sunny and Nick's life were turn upside down. (No, it's not because of Ada!) They both found out that they're half brothers. Nick's dad (Paul) raped Sunny's mother while the father was away. Sunny's mother was carrying Sunny who's actually Paul's real son while Nick is not. So (not to confuse anyone), Amy, Kathy, and Nick are actually full blood relatives while Sunny is only half. Paul's real wife couldn't give him a son but knew of Sunny's existence so she went and sought out Sunny's mother to ask her give her son back to Paul. Nick was really sick at the time and they didn't have any money to take him to a doctor. Willing to do anything to save her son, she gave him to Paul lying that this was his son. (Now do you know why she hated Sunny?) Never forgetting the fact that Sunny was that bastard's real son, she was happy to discover Nick was her son. To make up for the last time, she was willing to forgive Nick for anything. That son can do no wrong while Sunny can do nothing right. When Paul discover that Sunny was his real son and not Nick, he kicked Nick out of the family and ended all ties. Nick was devastated when he found out that the father he loved and respected so much wanted nothing to do with him while treating a practical stranger like his own son. Seeking revenge, Nick vows to do anything to get back what is rightfully his. Including murder To sum it all up, Amy married Felix but discovered that Kathy bore him a son so she divorced Felix and got together with Gallen. But Kathy and the baby died in a car accident leaving Felix all alone. Ada and Sunny do eventually get together only to have Nick ruined it all. Nick caused Felix to go blind, Paul to have a stroke and ended up a vegetable, killed Jessica and her brother and in the end, killing the one woman he loved above all else, Ada. (This part is really sad and I don't want to ruin it for those of you who haven't watched it yet!) In the end, Felix realized that Amy never really loved him, at least, not in the same way as she does Gallen so he encouraged her to find Gallen so they can be together. The ending has Sunny mourning Ada while playing the piano and Gallen and Amy hugging. Personal opinions: This is one of the better series I've seen for awhile. It's along the lines of Greed of Man, Cold Blood Warm Heart, Flaming Brothers and of late, ATE so if you like complicated love stories and brothers against brothers, (or if you liked any of the above series) this is a must-see for you. I must warn you though, the ending will have you screaming NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! Or WHYYYYYYYY!!!!!! Or both!!!!!!!!!! The story is good but complicated in its love stories. Too many quadrangles where this person likes this person but that person like someone else. Nick as a villain is a must see! He did a great job (but not as good as Gallen in CBWH or Adam Cheng in GOM) and this role made him extremely popular. Gallen's character is the same as ATE (bad guy turn good guy) but does a much better job here than in ATE. Sunny is kind of wooden and I don't know if it's his character is supposed to be like that or if it's just his acting. Jessica is okay, nothing much on her character except that she shouldn't have to die. Felix is excellent (as always...hey, it comes from experience!) and even though you'll want to hate him for causing Kathy and Amy pain (come on, any man should know you can't date sisters without someone getting hurt!), you'll end up rooting for him anyway. As for Kathy and Amy...well, they were both pretty annoying but you can't help feeling sorry for them. They're both nice people but somehow, things just didn't work out for them. Funny thing is that TVB wanted to use pretty much the same cast for ATE hoping to recreate the same success and magic as SOH but it didn't work. They did the same for Healing Hands by putting the same cast as Files of Justice and that didn't work the same either. Rating: $$$$ |
