AT THE THRESHOLD OF AN ERA I & II
Themesong #1 -- Gallen Law

Luck changes day by day
How many years would I have with you
With only one word, I could've made you stay by my side
We could've had the same dreams/goals
But our fates changed
And I can't remember how many tears have fallen
To make a brighter day

Lets remember our past
Reminisce on some rainy day
Keep our confidence up
Be happy/peace with our family
And start a new beginning in our hearts
Forget the pain and just start again
Let Me Stay -- Gallen Law
(Subtheme song #1)

No one would believe
That I could treat you good
That I could make you happy
So I didn't say my desires out loud

Even with courage, I couldn't speak them out loud
Watching you with him, a perfect match
So I patiently wait, without remorse

Chours:
Please let me stay, I would stay
You speak one word, I would make time stand still
I would wait for you, thinking of you each day
But I couldn't say these thoughts out loud

So please let me stay, I would stay
In your heart, deep inside
Please remember me fondly
For this is a fact, which I cannot change

Your lover left, left you behind
He left you with pain and sorrow
He gave you bitter happiness
And I thought I was the one, to give you sadness
You Don't Love Me -- Nicky Wu
(Subtheme song #2)

Bridge:
It was you who saw through my love for you
It was you who didn't acknowledge that love
You chose to ignore it and push it aside

Without you, I would've given up
To have you, I would be the lucky one
I know in my heart, I love only you

Chorus:
But you don't love me
You admired me because of what I did for you
It was my fault for loving you too much
I couldn't figure out what you were thinking

Repeat Bridge

There a you, there's a me, but no us
I had envision a picture perfect ending
So forgive me for thinking we would have a happy ending

Repeat Chorus

But you don't love me
You never treasure me, in your heart you knew already
I was the stupid one, making the same mistake
All because I liked you and didn't want to let this go.
Avoiding You -- Joey Yung

The world's most puzzling thing is love
The truth is that I like him
But I don't know how to say it out loud
The more I think about it,
The more scare I become, the harder it is
How can I get you to notice me
I don't really know, I'm not ver clear

The world's most puzzling thing is love
The truth is I am in love with him
But I am afraid to show him my love
The more I wait, the more I give, the more I lose
In the end, you'll slip away, out of my hands

Chorus:
If by avoiding you, can I still be your secret lover?
Can I wish my hardest to be with you forever?
If by avoiding you, will your love keep evading my grasp?
I keep reaching to pull you closer
I refuse to believe that we will never be together

The world's most puzzling thing is love
The truth is we love each other
But why do we have this emptiness in our hearts
The more I remember, the heavier my heart is
The harder to forget
My thoughts of you loses all control
If I never started this journey with you
This will never have happened
Who would have ever known
That my love for you will never end
Heaven and Earth Has Love -- Gallen Law
(Themesong #2)

Heaven may not grow old
But people will change
Truth is heaven and earth has no love
So they don't understand relationships or feelings
Who can following my thinking on this

Chorus:
Because of your love
Your kindness to me
Which cause me to feel passion
You understand me
And share my dreams

If there's love inside the heart
If there's passion for life
Then please believe that when this war is over
There will only be one winner

If there's really love
And heaven and earth are real
With one deep breath and one sound
I will be the one to survive
My heart's desire will be heard
A Man Like Me -- Louis Koo

Even though I know this ill-fated romance will not last
It's still worth a try
I wish for you to follow me
Even if our days are not secure
Like the fire I carry withinIt is not enough to sustain
Why should it be allow to hurt you

*Like a hand that is injuried
I have nothing
If only I can be with you
And speak of forever
To be your best friend
Might be easier than being your lover

#For a man like me
Should never learn about happiness
Even if it's a simple kind of joy
It would never last
Even if I could treat you better
It'll be thinner than a sheet of paper
Maybe one day, I can give you happiness.
Naive -- Louis Koo
(Sub-themesong )

Watching the white clouds float by
Seeing things change in a thousand different ways
To find a deeper meaning, in people's lives
Like how the wind can meet the cloud in one minute
But in the next, it drifts apart
Each going its separate way
This is the same with all the other things in this world

Chorus:
Love can turn into hate
The one you love most can become your enemy
Love can easily cause you pain
All because you were too naive
To know that love leaves traces of tears behind

When we watched the clouds float by
We saw things changed in a thousand different ways
We didn't find what we were looking for
Can you give me the reason why
The wind goes by to hug the cloud in sleep
Only to discover the tighter it holds onto
The faster it falls apart
Like how laughter can quickly turn into tears
I Will Know When to Leave -- Wong Kit

I used to consider love to be a trivial thing
Like watching clouds float by in the sky
Me loving you will not bring the happiness you deserve
It will only cause my heart to break into tiny little pieces

So I keep my heart's desires to myself
And I make myself tear away
But in the darkness of the night
My heart will remember fondly
Of your love like scenes from a movie

I will know when to leave
I will also know when the time is right
When it is the right time for your love to die
But I will not be able to control the fact
That I will think of you each and every day

I will know when to leave
I will also know when the time is right
Breaking up will always follows by tears
It doesn't matter who is right or wrong

When you say goodbye to me this time
Can I give you just one last kiss

When you see me once again
Can I love you just one more time
Synopsis

The epic drama for the new millennium created a lot of hype but unfortunately couldn't quite hit the mark.  The cast is strong with Gallen Law (yet again) as the lead with Sunny Chan, Roger Kwok, Nicky Wu, Paul Chun and Louis Koo to support him.  On the female side, there are Liza Wong (who's making her comeback to TV series), Flora Chan, Kenix Kwok, Maggie Siu and Ada Choi.  What was lacking in this would-be great epic drama was the stupid plot.  The entire 100 chapters were based on miscommunications and revenge, although I must say the first 50 chapters are way better than the last 50 (despite the appearance of Louis Koo). =)

Gallen's character is very similar to his other character in
Secrets of the Heart.  He's basically a good guy but occasionally can get down and dirty if needed.  He's the oldest in his family with Grace Yip as his sister and Hawick Lau as his brother.  His two best friends are Sunny and Roger.  Sunny is a very righteous guy who believes in following the rules.  Roger is your average boy-next-door who often gets stuck between Sunny and Gallen's arguments.

Gallen started off as a businessman but after his attempt to launch his own product failed, he turned to the family businessconstruction.  Since Sunny is an architect, it's only natural that Gallen wants him to be a partner.  Roger also joined in to help with the financial side of the business since he's a banker.  The three friends thought nothing would break up their friendship but of course, a girl always get in the way.

Gallen and Ada were once a couple.  She met him while Gallen was on a business trip in China.  He took her with him to Taiwan but ended up leaving her there for good after his business deal failed.  Then Kenix came into his life.  First, Roger has a crush on Kenix when he helped her out but Kenix already had feelings for Gallen and turned him down gently.  Roger didn't mind that she preferred Gallen but he warned Gallen to not hurt her.  Meanwhile, Sunny was dating Maggie but things did not look good when she went into business with Nicky.  Maggie, the career woman, had no time for Sunny and was finding herself not wanting the same thing she once used to.  They later break up.  Even though Gallen has feelings for Kenix too, he's afraid to act on them.  He pushes her away and she ends up marrying Sunny.

Roger and Grace had something that might have been good, but she left for school overseas so he was once again alone.  Flora, a lawyer (yes, again!), at first was into Nicky but since Liza (Flora's mother) married Paul (Nicky's father), they became stepsiblings so that whole "what might have been" stop.  Flora later became attracted to Gallen and the two ended up having an affair even though he's still in love with Kenix.  Kenix became pregnant but unfortunately, Sunny began to change.  He finally realized that he wouldn't get anywhere by just following the rules.  One thing after another caused him to do evil things.  He killed Roger's parents, lied to Kenix, almost kill Gallen, but in the end, Sunny was forgiven by his friends and his wife.  Sunny died after he fell over a cliff.  Kenix got framed for his death.  She was sentenced in Taiwan and had her baby in jail.  She sadly gave her son to Gallen's custody but never gave up hope that Gallen would rescue her.  In the end, Gallen's failed attempt to get Kenix out of jail caused her death and she died right before Gallen's eyes.

Through this whole ordeal, Flora stood by her man and defended Gallen against the whole world.  Gallen was most unappreciative and ignored Flora for the most part.  Only after Gallen found out who was behind Sunny's death and framing Kenix did he realize that he likes Flora.  But it was too late, Flora got tired of being used and finally left Gallen for good.  Flora later found happiness with Michael Wong and they left for England (or was it America?).

Back in Taiwan, Louis (Sunny's half-brother) got words of Sunny's death and blamed Gallen for the murder.  What he didn't know was that Sunny had already forgiven Gallen and the two were friends again.  So Louis assumed that Gallen killed his brother and proceed to destroy him.  Ironically, Louis's current girlfriend was Ada.  Louis went to Hong Kong and found work with Paul (Gallen's uncle) who also hated Gallen for killing his second son (the second son was the one who killed Sunny and framed Kenix for it).  They set out to destroy Gallen but failed.  Eventually, Paul forgave Gallen and the two families buried their differences.  Louis, not content in losing Paul as ally, sent Ada up to be a spy.  She got a job working for Gallen's new company as a secretary and Ada would relay all information to Louis.

By this time, Roger had developed a crush on Ada while she began to have doubts about Louis.  Louis found Kenix's long lost twin (played by Kenix) and sent her to turn Gallen's world upside down.  Little did he know that she would fall in love with Gallen and vice versa.  Poor Louis, first he lost Paul, then Kenix's twin and last, but not least, Ada.  Ada was on her way to tell Louis that Gallen didn't kill Sunny but got hit by a car and lost her memory.  The only thing she remembered was the time spent with Gallen.  Feeling bitter and frustrated, Louis tried to win Ada back but it was no use.  She doesn't remember a thing about him.  Roger, meanwhile, saw his chance and began to woo Ada.  She started to have feelings for Roger too and they were this close to getting marry but then she regained her memories and left with Louis.  But their relationship was never the same again.  Even though they got married, Louis lost his trust in Ada and she began seeing his evil side.  The last straw was when he hit her whenever he was angry.  Understanding that Louis was possessive and would never let her go, she walked into the ocean never to be seen again.  Louis was distraught with the thought that he drove his wife to suicide and tacked one more thing to blame Gallen for.

The final showdown between the two ended in tragedy.  Louis was about to kill Gallen when Louis's father showed up and interrupted.  He didn't want his son to dig himself deeper into the hole.  It was bad enough that Louis indirectly killed Ada, but to commit first degree murder was unforgivable.  During the struggle, Louis and Gallen were trapped underneath a mud avalanche.  It was there that they made their peace and Louis died in the ambulance after hearing Sunny's words of wisdom.

Roger bumped into Ada at the airport one day.  At first, she pretended she didn't know who he was but when Roger told her that Louis was died, she cried in relief.  They married for good this time around.  Ten years later, Gallen and Roger fulfilled Sunny's dream by creating the Smoke-Free City.  At the celebration, Flora came back to congratulate Gallen and also brought Kenix (the twin) back so everyone had a happy ending.

Of course, there was a lot more subplots that I didn't mention but I thought that writing about the main plot was enough.  This series could've been great but due to frequent script revisions and Flora's illness, the whole thing kinda fell apart.  I have to say, the actors did a great job, despite the poor script.  Some standout performances include Sunny, Kenix, and Roger (that scene when he found out that Sunny killed his parents still lingers in my mind).

Side note: Stars who turned down parts consisted of Adam Cheng, Julian Cheung, Kelly Chen, Maggie Cheung H.Y., Francis Ng, and a few others.  The next big drama?  Supposedly, it's about the stock market (yes, again!) and two brothers played by Julian Cheung and Roger Kwok.  Next up for Gallen, Flora, Ada, Louis, Kenix, and etc.?  Sunny left TVB right after filming this series due to money issues and can be seen in a series airing on ATV starring opposite Astrid Chan (another TVB alumni).  Ada can be seen in the beginning of Healing Hands II and later in a series about horse racing (
On The Track or Off)  with Steven Ma.  Flora can also be seen in the Healing Hands sequel and in a refreshing series called A Taste of Love starring opposite Lawrence Ng.  Gallen is filming two different series.  One with Christine Ng and Melissa Ng about street vendors (Hope for Sale) and the second one called Seven Sisters starring Charmaine Sheh, Melissa Ng, Florence Kwok, and more.  Louis can soon be seen in A Step into the Past starring Jessica Hsuen and Sonija Kwok.  Kenix can be seen starring with Gordon Lam Ka Tong in Reaching Out.
