**Chapter 2: A Sugary-Sweet Apology**
Michelle took her tray over to a table across the restaurant and sat down, making sure her back was to the counter. *Oh my goodness.. what did I just do?!?* her mind raced.
*I'll tell you what you did, you only just blew off the cutest guy on the planet!!* her mind answered back.
She turned and looked over her shoulder back at Justin. He had his back to her, facing the counter, and she swore that the giggling, blonde employee was flirting with him. *Of course she's flirting with him! Who wouldn't flirt with him? Only someone as stupid as me..* Michelle turned away again and focused on her dinner, which didn't seem too appetizing anymore.
A second after Michelle turned away Justin looked over his shoulder back at the girl. He had been terribly rude. Honestly, half the reason he cut her off in line is because he didn't see her.. but maybe the real reason was that he was so preoccupied with himself that he didn't look. He leaned over the counter and whispered something in the blonde employee's ear. She giggled, grew all flustered, and then nodded, running to get whatever he had asked for.
Michelle slowly ate her fries in a cold despair of silence when a soft voice behind her made her half jump to her feet, "Not hungry?"
Justin walked around the table, pulled out the chair across from her and sat down. Michelle was so nervous she was afraid to look up at his face, for fear she would burst out crying or start screaming when her mind finally came to the realization of what was happening, that Justin Timberlake was a few feet away from her at that very second. "You know.. the longer you look at those fries, the less appetizing they're going to look."
Her eyes bolted from her fries up to meet his. "Here." He was holding out an vanilla ice cream cone.
Michelle just looked at him strangely. "It's an ice cream cone," he said flatly.
"I know what it is," she shot back coldly, "I'm just wondering why you're here handing it to me."
"I wanted to apologize." Justin scanned her face for any sign that she would accept it. "I realized a few moments ago I was terribly rude to you, and I'd like to make it up to you. Please, just take it. It'll make me feel better."
Michelle reached out and took the cone, and for a few breif seconds, their hands touched. She felt her heart leap twice over, but again pushed it to the side of her mind. "Thank you.." she mumbled, as she held the cone in front of her.
"Aren't you going to eat it?" Justin smirked.
"Maybe.." she smiled back at him. She looked at the table and realized he had an entire tray of food. "Weren't you in a really big hurry?"
"Yeah, but it can wait," He looked out the window, the car was still there, it wouldn't leave without him. "Hey, weren't you in a really big hurry yourself?" Justin leaned back in his chair.
"I guess it could wait too.." Michelle gazed at the ice cream cone, "You know.. I'm not a child, you can't just buy me off with a treat and think that makes it all better."
"Well how old are you?" it was a question he had been asking himself for the past couple of minutes.
Michelle hesitated a second, "Twenty." She tried to look completely confident, but she could tell by the look on his face that he didn't believe her. "Ok.. eighteen. But I'll be nineteen in April!"
Justin laughed, and Michelle thought it was like music to her ears, and she almost forgot what he had done that had made her so mad in the first place. She took a lick of her ice cream and smiled.
"You know, you're adorable when you're mad, but I think you're even prettier when you smile."
Michelle looked up at him and saw that he was serious. If he was teasing she could've just laughed it off. Instead her face just turned a full flush of red. "Thanks.." she whispered.
"So.. are you.." Justin couldn't quite place why the question was so hard to ask. Maybe it was because he was afraid of the answer, "going to the concert tonight?"
"Well, I don't know," Michelle said, making sure to conceal her smile. "You see, I just recently found out that my favorite guy in the band is a total egotistal jerk. I'm not sure I want to go anymore." She looked up at him, expecting to find an amused grin spread across his face, but instead he was looking at the floor, looking almost.. disheartened.
"Justin, I was just kidding! Of course I'm going to the concert! I have been a fan for like.. ever! I'm not giving up my 15th row seats!"
His head bolted up and he looked at her suprised. "What?" Michelle asked quickly, "Did I say something wrong?"
Justin shook his head, and Michelle lightly noted how the sunbeams from the window came in a bounced off his golden curls. "That's the first time you've said my name. You know, when we were up there in line, I almost thought that you didn't know who I was.."
"Of course I knew who you were. I just thought that the fact that EVERYONE knows who you are doesn't give you the right to ignore others."
"I know. I'm sorry, really I am. I honestly wasn't thinking straight. Will you ever forgive me?" He batted his baby blues at her in a puppy-dog look of pleading.
"Well, I suppose you're forgiven." She smiled.
"I really do have to get going though," Justin said, looking at his watch. "I guess I'll see you tonight then. 15th row you said?"
Michelle could only nod as he picked up his tray and walked away. She silently finished her ice cream cone and quickly went to her car. It was as if she was walking in a dream and with every step she was afraid that it would be the moment she woke up. Her car raced towards her friend's house. Samantha just HAD to hear about this.
Justin grin stayed plastered on his face as he got in the car. "Have a nice time?" the driver smiled at him through the rear-view mirror.
"Yes, very." Justin's smiled remained through half of the trip back to the venue, until then, when he realized he had never gotten her name.
**Chapter 3: The Concert**Michelle nearly knocked Samantha over as soon as she opened the front door. "You will NOT believe what just happened to me!" Michelle was pacing back and forth across the living room, looking quite frantic.
"Did something happen with your car? Are you ok?" Samantha looked at her friend a little worried.
"No! Nothing like that! I.. I.. I have to sit down." She plunked herself down on the couch and motioned for Samantha to sit next to her. "I just ate lunch at McDonalds... with Justin Timberlake."
Samantha jumped up from the couch as if it were on fire. "That is SO not funny," she glared down at her friend. "Don't even tease me like that."
"I'm serious. It was.. the strangest thing. I don't think it's fully hit me yet.." Michelle looked down at the floor and shook her head.
"Oh my God! You ARE serious!" Samantha sat next to her friend again, grabbed both her shoulders with her hands and shook her, "How did this happen?!?"
Throughout the entire story, and for a few silent minutes afterward, Samantha just stared at her friend, her mouth hanging open. Finally some words came to her, "That's amazing! Did you get his autograph?"
Michelle looked a little flustered, "No, I didn't even think about that! I guess I wasn't really thinking about anything, it all went so fast, it never even crossed my mind." Her heart sank and her face went grim. "That was probably the only time I'll ever get close to him. I totally blew it."
"Well, I'm sure he'll be looking for you in the audience tonight. We're going to make you look fabulous." Samantha grabbed her friend's hand and pulled her back towards the bathroom, where an entire array of beauty and hair supplies were set out, waiting to be used.
****************Justin burst into the guys' "toy room" in the venue. They always had a room set up full of fun stuff where they could just kick back and relax, and Justin was sure the guys would be there. "Hey guys, sorry I'm a little bit late. I got held up."
The guys looked up from what they were doing. JC just frowned and shook his head, "And I thought I was always 'The Late One'!"
Chris took one quick look at Justin's face and saw it. "What's her name?"
Justin's eyes bolted to meet his, "What?!"
"C'mon man, it's obvious. You have the exact same look that Joey gets whenever he comes back from clubbing. It's practically stamped on your forehead: 'I met a girl.' So what's her name?" Chris smirked.
Justin felt his cheeks grow warm, he was blushing. "Actually.. I don't know her name.. but it's nothing really.."
This got everyone's attention. "Did she want an autograph?" Lance asked politely.
Justin looked suprised, "You know what? It never even came up.. I didn't even realize it till now.. but I guess she was too angry with me to think about it." He smiled.
Chris was puzzled, "Angry with you?! What teenage girl was angry with YOU?"
"Well, she's not like any other girl I've ever run into.. No screaming.. no crying.. no 'Oh my God!'s.. it was kinda nice.." Justin said with a far-off look in his eyes.
"Oh man.." Joey said, "You've got it this bad and you don't even know her name?"
"Got what?" Justin looked around at the other guys, confused. They all just laughed and shook their heads.
"C'mon guys," JC brought them all back to reality, "We gotta get ready for the show."
***********************Michelle stood in front of Samantha's bedroom mirror, looking herself over. "Hmm.. I don't know.." Her light brown hair was put into soft spirals which tumbled over her shoulders in waves, and the blonde highlights made the light bounce off every twist. Her eyes were shadowed a deep purple, which accentuated the green in her eyes, and contrasted with the bright emerald color of her shirt.
"You look great.. now stop fussing." Samantha said as she pulled some lipstick out of her drawer.
"I never wear lipstick," Michelle frowned. "You know that."
"Yes, I know that. But you're wearing some tonight. Who knows, maybe someone will want to kiss those lips!" she giggled.
"Oh give me a break.. You know that would never happen," Michelle said as her face turned a bright red, almost matching the shade of lipstick in her friend's hand.
"Yeah, but I also never dreamed you would eat lunch with Justin Timberlake at our local McDonalds," Samantha said, smirking.
Michelle laughed, "Yeah, I guess you're right."
"Of course I am. Now stop talking so I can put this on you."
*****************************The show was amazing. The girls had been to other *NSync shows, but they had never been this close. From the 15th row they could see everything, and everything they saw, they loved. As Michelle looked up at Justin dancing and singing on the stage, it was as if the person she met today was somebody totally different. This was the Justin Timberlake she used to know, the Justin most teenage girls thought they knew, but earlier today she had a glimpse of what he was really like, without all the stage glamour. The thought crossed her mind that she might like him better that way, just a normal guy.
******************************It was like a drug.. being up on the stage. No matter what mood any of the guys were in, once they stepped on that stage it was gone. Justin was in a type of euphoria as he danced and sang his way through the entire concert. The lights were so bright that it was hard to see the audience, but he knew what they looked like: hands in the air, dancing, jumping, screaming, some of them even crying... and seeing thousands upon thousands of them all in one place, doing it all because of you.. it was a rush like no other.
The concert was almost over, but it was the guys' favorite part, the part where they reached out to their fans. The guys all smiled to one another as the music to "This I Promise You" cued up and the glass stage started to roll.
"When the visions around you bring tears to your eyes,As they rolled past row after row they looked over their fans, each one reaching out, calling to them, praying and hoping for a look from one of them, a wave, a smile, any sign that they knew they existed. The guys looked over all of them, singing, waving occasionally, smiling, knowing that it made their fans feel special.
Michelle stood frozen as the rolling stage approached their row. Samantha was jumping up and down behind her, calling for JC to wave or smile, but Michelle just gazed up at Justin, with a smile of pure bliss on her face.
Justin looked over the crowd, knowing they had to be somewhere around the 15th row, and that the girl he had met that afternoon just had to be there.. somewhere.
"And I will take.. you in my arms..And then he saw her, light-brown and golden curls falling down over her shoulders, eyes like deep pools of green looking up, gazing directly at him, locked with his, and the sweetest, most sincere smile on her face.
And Justin forgot the words to the song.
A horrified look crossed JC's face as he realized the instrumentals to the song were going on, but Justin wasn't singing. After a few tense moments, he quickly improvised and sang over Justin's part himself.
Lance looked over at Justin confused, wondering if something had happened to him, while Joey poked Justin with his elbow, hopefully snapping him out of whatever trance he had gotten himself into.
Chris looked at Justin and followed his gaze down into the crowd. And he knew. She was there. He didn't know which one she was, but he knew that's what had stopped Justin, and the fact that he knew the reason made Chris grin.
