Sixth Grade Social Studies

Welcome to sixth grade Social Studies!  Our curriculum for Social Studies this year is Europe and Northern Asia.  The state has instituted a change in the sixth grade social studies curriculum.  Starting next year sixth grade students will learn about Europe, Russia, and South America.  Your student will not have any changes this year.  Within the broad topics of Europe and Northern Asia, we cover history, cultures, religions, societies, geography, and current events.  We will begin with ancient history and work our way to modern day all the time discussing the culture and events of the places and people we are studying.

The first era we cover is Ancient Greece.  Then we travel through time to Ancient Rome, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and Reformation, then on to the Industrial Revolution, Napoleon, Russia, Colonialism, and the Rise of Nations.  When we finish all of that we begin what is called modern history which starts with World War I, then World War II, and finally the Cold War and Europe today.

This is a huge amount of time to cover and a monumental amount of information.  We cover some topics in detail and others we only just scratch the surface.  It's a lot of information to deal with but I love to talk about all of these areas and I know we can have tons of fun talking about the history, geography, and current events of Europe.

Each day the students and I will conduct a small lesson called Campana Opus.  This beginning lesson will deal with the current events of Europe and Northern Asia.  It could be discussing current rate of the Euro Dollar, or the  war crime trial of Slobadon Milosevic happening right now in The Hauge.  I feel this is a great way to talk about what is going on right now in your student's world, and I have found that it can become a very important jumping off point for all kinds of class activities.  We have had debates, class discussions, role plays, along with many other activities that jump right from current events.

My name is Mr. Michael Hutchinson.  I am entering my fifth year of teaching.  All of my teaching experience has been at Davis Drive here on the Bears Team.  This year I will be working on completing my National Board certification.  It will be a great deal of work for me, but a wonderful way to reflect and improve my teaching.

As soon as you walk into my classroom you will see that I'm a gigantic Star Wars fan.  Yoda is my favorite character, because he's the educator of the Star Wars Universe.  Listen to him, you may learn something!

I have a classroom turtle currently named Ginger, but a research project done by the students at the beginning of the year will help me give her a middle name.

I love working at this school and have a great time with extra duties.   I am the Yearbook advisor, for the second year.  I had an interesting time getting my first yearbook out, but now that I know what I am doing a little better I expect this year's book to be even more fun.  I also work as the assistant boys soccer coach.  We have a strong tradition and a promising team coming up this year.

My class is not easy.  I'm going to make you think, but its also not impossible to get a great grade.  Just keep up with all of your work and be creative.  This class is structured around creating a creative, thinking student.  I love to tell stories and make history a story that is interesting and relative to our lives today.  So get ready this is going to be the social studies year of your life.
