Under the cover of night
One of the mistakes we made in September was leaving too late, which was still early (and dark) at 6am, but not quite early enough. This time we left at 5:20am, with our head lamps guiding the way. It was a lot colder, and I did not remove my outer layers of clothing for a long time. |
The beginning of the trail was well-marked and easy to follow. We were guided along the switchbacks which extended up above the mountain along a cold river of melted snow. From this vantage point (7,100 feet in elevation) we could see the twin lakes below us, where we had started our climb.
Left: Sunrise over the twin lakes Right : Switchbacks
The switchbacks then stopped and took us through a flat and relatively easy part of the trip.
Arriving at Horse Creek Trail: August vrs. September, approximately 70 minutes into the hike
