Under the cover of night
| One of the mistakes we made in September was leaving too late, which was still early (and dark) at 6am, but not quite early enough. This time we left at 5:20am, with our head lamps guiding the way. It was a lot colder, and I did not remove my outer layers of clothing for a long time. |
The beginning of the trail was well-marked and easy to follow. We were guided along the switchbacks which extended up above the mountain along a cold river of melted snow. From this vantage point (7,100 feet in elevation) we could see the twin lakes below us, where we had started our climb.
Left: Sunrise over the twin lakes Right : Switchbacks
The switchbacks then stopped and took us through a flat and relatively easy part of the trip.
Arriving at Horse Creek Trail: August vrs. September, approximately 70 minutes into the hike
