BOOKS REVIEWS

More Than Meets The Eye, by Dr. Richard Swenson (posted August 16, 2006 by Pastor Dan)

I justed finished this book and WOW what an amazing book (by the way this is Pastor Dan). After reading this simple to understand yet complex book (does that make sense) you will never view God in the same way. Dr. Swenson points out all of the amazing, complicated, unbelievable details of God's creation.

What I'm trying to say is this. We are made in such a complex way that I don't know how you could believe it happened by "chance". Dr. Swenson explains the human body and explains the scientific odds that this life could just randomly happen.

This book would be a great group discussion book with your friends who believe in evolution. I'm sure we have a copy of this book in the church library. Stop by and take a look. Call me once you realize how amazing we are.

Chris Tomlin, The Way I Was Made (posted July 19, 2006 by Pastor Dan)

This excellent little book is about Chris and his growing up in Christ, but more important it is an excellent book on why we worship through songs! I would highly recommend this as a very quick summer read that will change your whole outlook on why we worship through music. There are other ways to worship, but Christ points out how music is such a good emotional connection with God.

The book is very short, but it packs a lot in on those pages. Find out how God spoke to Chris in regards to the songs that he has written. After reading why he wrote, "The Famous One" I can't sing that song without thinking of the background and how it truly brings honor and glory to God. If you can't afford the cost of the book come see me, I'll be happy to either lend you my copy or better yet, buy you your own copy.

JESUS, a Novel, by Walt Wangerin (posted June 13, 2006 by Pastor Dan)

This is a great book for summer reading. Walt Wangerin is a fantastic novelist. He took the life of Jesus and put it into Novel form. It really does a good job of following the gospels and yet putting a personal spin on the life of Christ as seen through the eyes of John the beloved and Mary the mother of Jesus. I would highly recommend this for your summer reading list.

Let the Nations be Glad, by John Piper (posted June 13, 2006 by Pastor Dan)

If you are at all interested in missions this is a great book for you. Piper gives us a good overview of the Biblical foundation for Missions. He also does a great job of encouraging us as "the Church" to worship God in all that we do. This is not a light and easy read. You'll have to concentrate, but it's a great textbook for Missions.

The DaVinci Code, A Quest for Answers, by Josh McDowell, Green Key Books (posted May 4, 2006 by Pastor Dan)

This very short book does a great job of answering the issues that Ron Brown brings up in his novel. If you have read Ron Brown's book and wondered about the "wild" claims he makes about the Bible then you will want to read this book by Josh McDowell. Even if you have no desire to read the Davinci Code by Brown you might want to read this short book so that you know how to answer your friends who might have questions. Check it out!

The Navigators Bible Studies Handbook, Navpress, www.navpress.com (posted April 27, 2006 by Pastor Dan)

This short book is a "how to" book. It will teach you several different Bible Study methods so that you can learn to feed yourself from the Bible. We will be reviewing several of these methods in our Sunday morning curriculum coming up this month. But if you are serious about learning your Bible this little handbook is a must!

Eyes of the Tailless Animals, Prison Memoirs of a North Korean Woman, by Soon Ok Lee (posted April 13, 2006 by Pastor Dan)

This book is not an easy read. Although it is short (only 160 pages) it is full of material that will challenge your thinking and make you a bit angry.

Soon Ok Lee gives us very graphic detail of the abuses of the Communist North Korean Government. Soon Ok Lee was a good communist, a loyal party member and believed in all they stood for. So, why did they arrest her and put her in prison for years and abuse her? Because she refused to let a party leader have two suits from the stock that she purchased from China! Yup, this man wanted a second suit, but she told him that according to their rules each party member was allowed only one new suit.

The man became angry and wrongly accused Soon Ok Lee of offenses against the Communist party. So she was arressted, tortured and kept in jail with a proper trail.

It isn't until late in the book that she tells us about the Christians who are in the prison system. Her change of heart towards God doesn't happen until late in the book and is not built upon very much. But your eyes will be open to the harsh reality of life in North Korea.

It's not an easy subject to read about, but I challenge you to expand your world views and read about the human rights abuses in North Korea>

Taming a Liger (unexpected spiritual lessons from Napoleon Dynamite) by Jeff Dunn and Adam Palmer (posted March 30, 2006 by Pastor Dan)

Pastor Duane gave me a copy of this devotional book and I have enjoyed reading through portions of it. If you liked the movie "Napoleon Dynamite" then you will love this short devotional book. Each daily devotional is short enough to read before heading off to school. Oh, and in the back there is a "recipes" section for your favorite foods from the movie. Enjoy!

Black, Red & White by Ted Dekker (posted January 20, 2006 by Pastor Dan)

These three novels are a triology written by Ted Dekker. My son, Ryan, recommended them to me and I received them as gifts this Christmas! I must admit that at first I found the writing hard to get into, hmmmmm, maybe because they are written more for young people than old people.

Anyway, once I got past the first two chapters I really got into the Triology. The bottom line is this, the population of the world is facing total destruction by a virus released as a biological weapon.

What's interesting though is that the main character, "Thomas Hunter", is a modern day prophet. He lives in "two" different worlds. The present and the future. At least every time he falls asleep he goes from one world to the next. The advantage is this, in the future world things happen to give him information about the present world and thus he appears as a "prophet" who knows what is going to happen.

It sounds rather confusing, but actually it becomes quite captivating. Ted Dekker pulls the novels together in a way that has similarities to scripture. The bottom line is that Evil is trying to destroy all that God created, yet God is working in unusual ways to rescue His creation.

I think you would enjoy these novels. If you want to borrow a copy from me before buying them, as always that would be fine.

Without Warning and Vanished by Warren Tannenberg (posted October 26, 2005 by Pastor Dan)

These two novels are really very interesting. They deal with a Pastor and his family and their encounter with terrorist. The books move quickly and are well written. They will keep your attention. There is violence because of the terrorist theme.

Although the books are highly entertaining they also have a great set of Biblical lessons for us to learn. One, trusting God even when bad things happen to good people. Two, trusting God even when bad things happen to you. Three, seeing that God orchestrates events even when we don't think He is interested. Fourth, believing that God cares deeply about us even when we don't feel He is close at hand.

If you are a reader these two books are worth your time. If you don't want to buy them just come by my office and I will gladly check them out to you.
