PLAYSTATION:
FINAL FANTASY IX
Reviewed by
Hojo.
Those good guys at Squaresoft
have done it again. Finally, Final Fantasy IX has reached American,
British and Australasian shores. And it was worth the wait. This game is
arguably the best RPG game ever made. Its smooth graphics, mind-blowing
storyline and nifty music all add to its greatness.

Here is a complete rundown
on the characters, the story and the game in general.
The story is set in a
complete fantasy world. You start as Zidane, in an airship. The plan is
for Zidane’s to put on a performance for the Queen and the city of
Alexandria, well the rest of the thieves kidnap Princess Garnet. It just
so happens that Princess Garnet was also intending on running away that
night, so they leave together. The story takes off from there.
CHARACTERS:

Zidane Tribal: A
16-year-old thief with a tail, and the main man in FF9. Zidane has brown
hair, brown eyes and is known to be a bit of a ladies man. After finding
out that Princess Garnet is missing, he leaves his gang of thieves to go
look for her with Vivi and Steiner.
Vivi Orniter:
Vivi may appear to be a small, defenceless mage, but his powers are
awesome. He gets caught up with Zidane and co after accidentally ending up
on their airship. Steiner refers to him as “Master Vivi”.
Steiner:
Steiner is the leader of ‘The Knights Of Pluto’ – a group of Knights
that protect Queen Brahne and Princess Garnet. He is given the job of
stopping Garnet from being kidnapped, but fails to do so. He ends up
travelling with Garnet around the World, trying to get her to go back to
the Castle.
Princess Garnet:
Princess Garnet is the adopted daughter of Queen Brahne. She decides to
run away from the castle on the same night that Zidane and his gang of
thieves decide to kidnap her. They end up escaping and travelling around
the world.
These are the main
characters in the game, although there are several other people you meet
up with later on in the game.
As I mentioned before, the
graphics in FF9 are probably the best yet. The characters are smaller, and
might not seem as lifelike as in previous games, but still appear to be
clearer and crisper. The battle scenes are also improved, and the Summon
Monsters are the best ever.
Once again, Square have
got Nobou Uematsu to do the music. And he hasn’t let us down. Final
Fantasy IX features a mind-blowing soundtrack that is definitely up the
standards we’re used to.
Overall, Final Fantasy IX
is yet another masterpiece from Square. Even if some dodgy lowlife were
selling it in a darkened alley for $300, it would still be good value. A
must buy.
