GAMEBOY:
FINAL
FANTASY LEGEND II
Reviewed by

Okay, you've blown up all the Mako reactors saving the
planet, you've travelled through time and fought evil sorceress so that
you can change the present, all this from the comfort of your own bedroom.
But what if, for some strange reason you were to venture outside of your
room, to a place with no plug sockets? Scary thought, huh? Well, now you
can get the Final Fantasy Legend Trilogy on your battery powered GameBoys,
just incase such a scary thing ever happens to you!

When you first boot-up Final Fantasy Legend II, you
might be quite alarmed...there aren't any set character names, which in my
opinion sucks quite a bit, there are also no true personalties to the
characters either...which again, sucks. But you, the player get to choose
whom you want to be part of your posse. Which kind of adds some strategy
the whole game, as depending on which type of beings your party will
consist of is crucial if you want to finish the game as easily as
possible. You have to choose a total of four characters to make up your
team, the choices are; Humans; Mutants; Robots; and Monsters. The humans
and mutants level up in a similar way to all RPGs, but this isn't the case
with the robots and monsters. You need to buy new parts for the robot to
get higher stats, and you need to feed the monsters the meat of the
enemies you kill for them to evolve into a different monster. But eat the
meat of some weedy enemy, and you'll be turned into an equally crappy
monster...so watch out!
Another thing that is different to the Final Fantasy
games most of us are used to, are the battles. Nope, them sometimes
annoying random battles are still here. But the actual weapons you use can
only be used a certain number of times. Meaning you'll need to carry extra
weapons on long journeys. But you have to limit the amount you carry along
with you as well, as you can only hold 20 items, which are normally filled
up with cure potions and the like. The good point about this is that
players don't have to have one type of weapon that them and them only can
use. There is also an ultimate weapon hidden in the game, but unlike
Cloud's Ultima Weapon sword, you can only use this sword once, then it
shatters...which I found out the hard way, d'oh!
What do all the Final Fantasy games have in common? No
matter what the graphics are like, the story lines are ALWAYS so gripping
that you don't even want to stop to sleep. While FF Legend II isn't that
gripping, the story still has some good points. The basic story sees
you're dad leaving when you are a child, he tells you he's after these
things known as MAGI. As he leaves, he gives you one piece of 77 pieces of
the magi-cal stuff. Then the years pass, and you decide to find and help
your dad collect MAGI. On your journey you learn more and more about MAGI,
and you learn that if all 77 pieces are collected, the person holding them
will turn into a god! Meaning that if it were to fall into the wrong
hands, the whole world could be destroyed! Not just your own though, there
are nine different worlds in FFL2 that can be travelled to via different
portals. And you must save them all.

Although this is a Final Fantasy game, it doesn't really
live up to what you would expect. There is better GameBoy RPGs out there,
such as the hugely popular Pokémon games. Which in my opinion is a better
choice, as it has battles, a fun story, and a loooooong lifespan. Final
Fantasy Legend II on the other hand, does have battles, a better
story-line, not that long lifespan, (the only thing that takes ages is the
final boss) and it isn't that much fun to play...the thing is, I don't
why...
Overall: 5/10
