It might not be a Squaresoft game, but it sure is a good
one. Konami have mastered the art of making stealth games, and this is
proof. Metal Gear Solid is one of the most engrossing, action-packed
adventure games ever made, and is arguably the best thing Konami have ever
produced.
You play Solid Snake, a retired spy who is brought back
to his job for ‘one last mission’. You are sent to a secret base in
Alaska with two tasks – save the “Darpa Chief” and the “President
of Arms Tech”, and find out more about what’s going on at the place.
Not long into the game, you find the Darpa Chief, but he dies while you
are talking to him. Mysteriously, the President of Arms Tech (Kenneth
Baker) also dies when you meet up with him. As you progress through the
game, you discover more about your friends, foes and most importantly
Metal Gear Rex – the giant nuclear battle tank that is hidden in the
depths of the base.
The graphics are, well… great. The faces aren’t
crisp clear, but you can make them out easily enough. The camera views are
also pretty good; you never had to move them to see what you’re doing.
The voices and sound effects are also exceptional. Snake’s
voice fits his personality perfectly, as do the rest of the characters.
The music adds yet more effect to the game, particularly when the guards
see you. Top points here.
Metal Gear Solid isn’t the first Metal Gear game made.
Way back in the days of the NES, Konami released Metal Gear 1 and 2, the
original games that started it all. These games were appraised for their
innovative style and challenging game play.
Overall, Metal Gear Solid is one heck of a game. It
might not be as long as an RPG, but it sure is as good (at least that’s
my opinion). If you’re into Mechs, stealth or simply action in general,
then this is the game for you. Three thumbs up.
