Boys in Green reject Overqualified Limb Slinger
In 1987 Nelson Touhig scored Offaly's highest ever recorded marks in the Leaving Ceritifcate. Over two weeks Touhig answered a total of four questions, one from an examination paper, before fainting in the examination hall,from the unnacustomed absence of banjo music.
Riding this tidal wave of academic success, Nelson decided on a career in the armed forces and consulted his school's guidance councellor. Tragically, wires got crossed and the misguided careers advisor dispatched Nelson to Dublin on the wrong bus. Arriving in the capital, confused and without a pig, Nelson made his way to the nearest college and signed up for the first available course. Now, 16 years later, Nelson is getting angry as he struggles to resume his military career.
"Well, my degree in modern dance left me less than ideally placed for a career in the armed forces", explains Nelson ; "As the Defence Forces Recruitment section have pointed out on a number of occaisions, classical ballet and my own jazz/beat fusion have a limited number of applications in the martial fields".
