The New Scene used to think that Shades of Culture were the only truly hype Canadian hip-hop act, until our CDN connex brought us a copy of Balance by Swollen Members.  After hearing one loop of Lady Venom, Swollen Members instantly became The New Scene's #1 Canadian crew and one of our favourites in the world.  The tag-team emceeing of the gruff Mad Child (also part of Perfect Strangers with Moka Only) and the energetic Prevail, combined with beats laced with spooky loops and horror movie samples, creates a definite and immediately recognisable style.  And the Members demonstrate their diversity by dropping dancehall tunes like Lady Venom, chillin beats like Counterparts and their more particular horror hip-hop songs like Horrified Nights.  The guest appearances are by other hype west-coast artists, most notably Dilated Peoples.  Rumour has it there's a new album out this summer.  Van City hip-hop fans should consider themselves extremely lucky.
