Chapter Six

"She slept in your bed?"Diane asked. She really didn't want to believe that one of her sons had slept with a girl in his bed."And where did you sleep?"

"I didn't,"Isaac said truthfully."I was up all night, sitting on the floor and worrying about her."

"Everyone's worried about her,"Diane told him, which was true. Diane herself was in pain, but she couldn't imagine Jade's pain. Jade had lost her mother, her father, and the boy she'd loved all her life. Diane had barely made it through her own mother's death so many years ago, and she was an adult. Jade was still a teenager and everyone she ever loved had died. Taylor had told her about Jade's suicide attempt years before, and how he'd barely been able to stop her.

Isaac looked his mother directly in the eyes."She stays in my room until Nick comes back from Boston. I want her where I can keep an eye on her."

Diane nodded, knowing that there was no fighting with him.

Jade was wandering aimlessly around the house when she heard some exceptionally bad piano playing coming from Mac's room. The door was open, and she couldn't stop herself from peering in.

Mac's tall and skinny thirteen-year-old frame was bent over and electric keyboard, which she recognized as one of Taylor's. He was desperately trying to play what she now could tell was "With You In Your Dreams". He paused, angrily wiped a tear away, and continued pounding out the chords.

"Mac?"she said softly.

He turned around and looked at her."Oh, hi, Jade."

"What are you doing?"she asked, coming into the room and sitting on his bed.

He hit another chord."I have to learn how to play."

"You 'have to'?"she asked.

He nodded, turning towards her."I can't let Hanson break up because Taylor's gone. If I learn how to play all his parts then I can take his place in the band. I have to do it for Zac and Ike. They'll miss the band and the fans will miss them."

Jade let a tear fall down her cheek. Mac was trying to take over for Taylor. It was the most touching thing that she had ever seen."Don't you play drums though?"

"Yeah, but Zac already is the drummer and he's even worse at piano than me."

Jade smiled, new tears still falling.

Mac sat beside her."I'm sorry."

"For what?"she asked.

He looked down."For making you cry. We're supposed to be making you happy, not making you cry."

"These are happy tears, Mac,"she said softly,"You are making me happy."

That night she attempted to return to the guest room."Oh, no, you don't,"Isaac said when he saw her."You're staying in my room until Nick comes home."

She didn't even try to fight him, knowing how stubborn he can be.

That night she dreamed that Taylor was alive and everything was perfect.
