Chapter Five "In the Room"

"Kick me out, let me go,
I don't belong here no more."

Isaac wasn't sure what had changed the most about Bethany, her appearance, or the way she stared at her feet constantly, like she was afraid of them. But surely she wasn't.

Or, could she be?

He stared at the ceiling. The suite he Tay, and Zac were sharing had two rooms with double beds in them. Zac had lost the coin toss and therefore was stuck on the pull-out couch in the living area.

It was kind of nice to have rooms to themselves for once. The last time they had been in England, there had been a shortage of hotel rooms and the three of them had been stuck in a tiny room with one queen-sized bed. Sleeping in the same bed with just one of his brothers was bad enough, as Tay snores and Zac farts in his sleep. That one night been a nightmare.

Things definately had felt strange that night, and not just because Bethany was there. Zac had been unusually silent while Jessi chattered constantly. Their Mom was more relaxed, which was nice to see. Perhalps she would finally get some well-needed rest. She had been working way too hard lately. Actually, maybe all that was because Bethany was there.

Except he wasn't sure what her being there had to do with Zac acting strange. Talia had gone to bed early, maybe that was it.

Rummaging in his luggage, Isaac came across a book he was pretty sure he had never read. He opened it to the first chapter, and had just began to read when an envelope fell out.

He recodnized Kari's handwriting immediatly. It was addressed to him in Tulsa, but there was no postmark, like she'd never sent it. Vaguely he remembered her returning a book to him before they'd left on the tour. That was the last time they had spoken.

He put the letter back inside the book.

"So, you're welcome to use my makeup anytime you want,"Jessi told her cheerfully as Bethany unpacked.

Boy was she glad she was only spending one night with Jessi. Jessi hadn't stopped talking once since she'd arrived. Bethany was developing a giant headache, and all she really wanted to do was go to sleep, yet she didn't have the heart to tell Jessi that. She must really miss talking to girls her age, Bethany reasoned.

Either that, or maybe she was just lonely. Bethany knew how alone you could feel sometimes, even when there were people constantly around you. There had been times in her life when being surrounded by people had made her feel so alone.

"Are you getting tired?"Jessi asked, her voice breaking through Bethany's thoughts.

She yawned in response, which made Jessi laugh. Actually, Bethany knew that if she hadn't stayed awake on the plane, there would have been no way she could have slept.

The two girls put on their pajamas and turned out the lights. Still, Bethany lay there wide awake, wondering what Zac was thinking at that very moment.

The sofa bed was one of the lumpiest Zac had ever encountered. You would have thought that such an expensive hotel could afford slightly nicer mattresses. He was not a princess, but there had to be about a thousand peas in that bed.

But the mattress wasn't the real reason he was still awake.

Why did she have to come? She'd made her point when she left. He'd gotten over it.

Or so he'd thought.
