Hello to all! Welcome to our latest adventure - building our timberframe home. This entire undertaking began sometime in late 1997. After many "buy or build" discussions, we decided that we wanted to build. And we didn't just want to build any old house - we wanted to build a timberframe. To top it all off, we wanted to be our own general contractors. We aren't sure how we came to love the timberframe style, but we think the fact that we needed a "home" for our "pet" George had something to do with it! |

The first step of the process was identifying our budget. After doing so, we started the search for land. With each lot we saw, our wants became more apparent. We knew that we couldn't put this house just anywhere. This was an important realization, but it made finding the "perfect lot" very difficult. So difficult, it took 18 months to find what we were looking for. On a very rainy Tuesday night in late May 1999, we found what we were looking for - country setting, mostly wooded, 3.5 acres. By Friday, we had made an offer that the owners accepted and we were on our way! We had already started to consider home plans, but now it became necessary to make a decision. Finding an existing home plan (from a home plan book or magazine) that had everything we wanted - without being ridiculous in size - was a nice thought, but not realistic. We spent the remainder of 1999 designing the home ourselves with the aid of Architectural software. By late January 2000, we were ready to get the plans "officially" drawn up. This turned out to be an extremely long process and we FINALLY received finalized plans in early May. Now started the scramble to get final quotes from subcontractors. We got everything together for the bank and closed on our construction loan in late August, and that's when the fun began (and hasn't stopped since!) This website picks up on the story from there.
