From TV
Guide
The Candidate: A sensational homicide case rocks
Boston in the series' two-hour, sixth-season opener. The
defendant is a charismatic state senator (Dylan Baker),
who's charged with killing the man purported to be his wife's
lover. Pretrial drama centers on the accounts of two key
witnesses: the politician's intransigent spouse and his reticent
teenage daughter. Later, courtroom skirmishes are interwoven
with the sometimes contentious strategizing of prosecutor Helen
Gamble and her associate, Alan Lowe (new series regular Ron
Livingston); and squabbling on the defense team, led by Ellenor
(Camryn Manheim).

Ellenor defends her friend, a powerful and well-liked senator,
who is accused of murder. The defense argues that it was a
crime of passion that happened when the senator discovered his
wife's affair.
In a surprise twist, the senator's daughter claims that she
killed the other man. The senator pleads guilty to
manslaughter. At the end of the episode, Helen Gamble
discovers that it was actually the senator, not his wife, who
was having the affair with the other man.

ABC's award-winning legal drama, "The
Practice," returns for its sixth season with a gripping
two-hour premiere, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 23 (9:00-11:00 p.m., ET/PT)
on the ABC Television Network. The episode marks the debut of
new series regular Ron Livingston as A.D.A. Alan Lowe.
Editors please note: This is a One-Time-Only airing of "The
Practice" in the 9:00-10:00 p.m. time period. "The
Practice" airs regularly on Sundays from 10:00-11:00 p.m.,
ET.
Set in Boston, "The
Practice" centers on the passionate attorneys of
Donnell, Young, Dole & Frutt. To these lawyers every case is
important, every client worth a fight to the end. Legal
maneuvering is the firm's modus operandi and they have it down
to a science, making even the most questionable arguments seem
convincing. And while they can't -- and don't -- win every
trial, the pursuit of justice remains the priority until the
final verdict is announced . . . and sometimes afterwards.
Pursuing justice, however, often confronts the firm with serious
ethical and moral issues of conscience.
In the season premiere episode, "The Candidate,"
Ellenor (Camryn Manheim) faces Helen Gamble (Lara Flynn Boyle)
and fellow A.D.A. Alan Lowe (Ron Livingston) in the heated, high
profile murder trial of close friend and well- liked State
Senator Keith Ellison (Dylan Baker). But when the Senator, his
wife (Virginia Madsen) and teenage daughter (Emmy Rossum) have a
hard time keeping their stories straight, the burden of
maintaining their client's innocence weighs heavy on the
defense, since the firm's reputation - and any chance of the
Senator's re-election - is on the line.
