Inter Arma Silent Leges
Two storylines raise thorny questions regarding legal rights,
law-enforcement authority and racial profiling.
The first case is apparently
inspired by repercussions from the Sept. 11 attacks. An
Arab-American's distraught wife (Jessica Steen) seeks help from
Rebecca (Lisa Gay Hamilton) in locating her husband, who's been
detained for national-security reasons that the Justice
Department won't specifically reveal. In the second case, Eugene
represents an accused killer, a black man whose defense hinges
on cross-racial impairment: a theory that an eyewitness who's
white---and unfamiliar with black people---might misidentify a
black suspect.
