New York Evening Mirror




I.    "...the  (New York) Evening Mirror printed "The Raven" in advance of any other publication on January 29, 1845, "by Quarles1," with an introductory paragraph that shows the inspiration of Poe and the style of Willis. This was the poem's first appearance in print. It was an enormous and complete success." (Bibliography Record 1)

        1 Quarles was one of many pseudonyms that Poe had written under.
            - Poe, as stated by author Kenneth Silverman, tended to use the names of famous poet's
                   when selecting pseudonyms. In this case Poe decided to use the name of Francis Quarles,
                   an English religious poet and emblem writer. (Bibliography Record 2)
