"...the (New York) Evening Mirror printed "The Raven" in advance of any other publication on January 29, 1845, "by Quarles1," with an introductory paragraph that shows the inspiration of Poe and the style of Willis. under.
- Poe, as stated by author Kenneth Silverman, tended
to use the names of famous poet's
when selecting pseudonyms. In this case Poe decided to use the name of
Francis Quarles,
