Welcome to Harbor Country

In the Summer, the beach is where you will want to spend the most time. The beach is Private, and it is clean and quiet with a wide amount of sandy area to enjoy. The water is clear and cool but not very deep at the waters edge, so it is perfect for the children to enjoy. We suggest life preservers for the little ones.
There are no parking accommodations at the beach so you will need to walk the block from your cottage to the Private beach access. There is a long set of stairs that are not wheelchair accessable, from there it is only another 100 yards to the water. This is a private Beach association with no parking for watercraft of any kind. There is no where to launch or dock any watercraft. you will need a plastic bag for cans, bottles and trash. Bring down a picnic lunch, and enjoy the day! Rolling coolers are very helpful.
We ask that you respect our neighbors property, and keep the area clean and quiet.

There are no lifeguards and very little shade on the beach, it is very sunny all day. You are going to need sun screen (applied frequently) a beach cover-up and hats. Tee shirts for the kids, and sunglasses for all, with a beach umbrella or a chair are a must. We have beach chairs that you can use at the cottage. Some beach toys and buckets with shovels are always fun, and you can leave them down at the beach for the duration of your stay. The summer days begin with an early sunrise, and end with sunset late in the day, so there is plenty of time to relax and enjoy our beautiful area. Watching the sunset is a major activity on the beach. Bring your beach chair and a bottle of wine with you and be prepared for a relaxing evening.

Time for Food

Ice Cream: Homemade ice-cream and fudge is a specialty here. Our favorite and recommended places for ice cream is... "Oinks Dutch Treat" 55 delicious flavors of Sherman ice-cream.
227 W Buffalo, New Buffalo, Michigan 616-469-353
New to the area is the Southland Chocolate Company!
Our favorite places to eat: "The Whistlestop"... our gourmet convenience store... great coffees and deli.
"Quick Bike Ride" located next to Red Arrow Roadhouse in Union Pier. Milda's is a corner deli/grocer that has fresh coffee along with Custom made deli sandwiches, homemade soups along with a small quaint area to read all the local and Chicago papers while enjoying a bagel or slice of pie etc. Milda also conducts seasonal activities like Lithuanian Easter Egg Decorating. An interesting place to visit next to G & K Party store and the local Ramberg Bakery. A fun corner to visit. The best kept secret for breakfast is "J & J Truck Stop" between Union Pier and New Buffalo with great prices no wait. Lunch is always the famous "Redamaks" a local landmark for beers, burgers & fries... Open March through October. Red Arrow Roadhouse which was listed in the March/April Midwest Living as the place to be and eat. Casual to Dressy how ever you feel. It is a favorite among locals and guests too, with moderate prices.

Forget Anything

Make a quick stop to G & K Party store in Union Pier. Also has VCR rentals. Don't forget to stop at the Bakery next door for some wonderful fresh baked goodies. Jackson Fruit Market is nice for fresh fruit and flowers if you do not have time to venture on the back roads to local farms. Barneys Food Market along with the drug store are right across the street in New Buffalo from Jackson's Fruit Market.

Things to Do

Fruit and produce picking is a fun activity for everyone. Take the time out to pick the fruit of season and enjoy them. Check the local papers for fruits and vegtables that are available. Kids will love this...

Golf is very popular in Harbor Country with plenty of Pro designed courses available. If it is miniature golf that you are looking for, there are 2 local with other activities there also.

Fishing: There's plenty of game fish in Michigan! You will need your own gear, but the fishing is wonderful in the area. The Galien River is a popular fishing spot.

Biking and Running is enjoyed all day in the area.

Antique shopping is a passion shared by locals and visitors to our community, in the Lakeside area. Along with Art Galleries galore! Here you will discover many hidden treasures, something for the "Collector" in all of us, as well as a stroll down memory lane...

Warren Dunes State Park 12032 Red Arrow Highway, Sawyer MI, is about 10 minutes away. This park boasts nearly three miles of pristine shoreline with dunes rising to 240 feet. Also find eight foot-trails, special programs, concession stand, volleyball nets, buoyed swimming areas, picnic areas and shelters.

Do not forget about all the Fall activities too. The beautiful fall colors, maybe a Notre Dame football game, we are only 45 minutes from South Bend IN.

A night out? How about the gambling boat?
The Blue Chip Casino is only a 15 minute drive. The boarding times are every 2 hours.

What to Wear

You will live in your bathing suit and cover-up. The rest of the time can be spent in casual wear. There are dressier places in the area for evening outings. It seems cooler at night after the days spent in the sun, and the mosquitoes come out, so you will also need some bug spray, and a light jacket. Bring some long pants and a sweater or sweatshirt just in case. Pack an umbrella in case of rain.
