Old News From The Search For Alexander

July 6, 2006 - New TSFA Myspace page, New recordings ever so close to completion

Now that it's no longer cool, the Search has a Myspace page. I like to think that it isn't because we're terminally behind in the times, as much as we're too self aware and hip to follow trends (but keep in mind that I like to think things that are blatantly untrue). Check it out at www.myspace.com/thesearchforalexander. It's still in its infancy, but we will be adding stuff to it all the time.
In other TSFA news, Jay is recording some finishing touches today on "A Mind at the End of its Tether". As soon as it is mixed properly we'll preview it on this page and the aforementioned myspace page. It's gonna rock your face off, I guarantee it! - IT.
(Warning: The Search For Alexander is in no way responsible for any and all faces rocked completely or partially off during the course of listening to the song in question)

June 15, 2006 - Jay Records and Garrett Cuts and Runs

Jay laid down some guitar parts for the new recordings. He did some tracks on Persona Non Grata, Threshold and January Boiled, and they are blistering hot. Look for the solo on Threshold.
Garrett has departed us for a short time for Woodstock, NB. We will be glad to see him back in Halifax on the 26th. Also, congratulations on the new job Garrett. -W.

June 10-13, 2006 - Big Updates
Took some time to update the website for the new millenium. Yes, it is six years late, but we got there! so slag off! We really want to hear what you think, so send along some comments, suggestions or broken links and mistakes to us!-W.

Ongoing - New Recordings
We are currently putting together some new recordings to capture our hot new tunes. Garrett has drums laid down for over a dozen tracks, and the rest of us are slowly beginning to fill in the space. Persona Non Grata, Threshold, January Boiled and A Mind at the End of Its Tether have had most members lay down thier parts. Although I am biased, I must say they are sounding great. Only a few of Jay's guitar tracks and some backing vocals remain. We will keep you posted on the recording process, as well as preview some tracks on our 'Music' site, so check back for more.-W.

June 13,2006 - Nova Scotia Provincial Election Day
It is election day! The Search For Alexander says "VOTE" (except maybe Garrett....who maybe can't?)-W.
April 19,2006

Ok, here's the skinny update as I type hastily on my coffee break. We're playing Gus' tonight and hoping take 2 is much less interesting an experience (Check the shows page). We'll have cds for sale there, 10$. New recordings are in the works, we did something like 20 drum tracks in 4 days a few weeks ago, and soon we'll be starting on everything else on em. They'll be rawkin... did I just say "rawkin"? well fuck. See you tonight, I'll update better later, -G

Feb 5th, 2006 This is it! The moment you've all forgotten you were waiting for...

With the CD out, we are now able to have our CD Release Show! This is kindof happening over 2 days later this week. First, a show with The Montgomery Moth at Reflections on Wednesday, and then the official release show at the Attic on Thursday with War Pony and The Fantods. Please check the shows page for all the details. The important thing is that our CD will be on sale for 8$ instead of their regular 10$.

There's really no other news right now that's compelling enough to be worth posting, so just remember that if you're out of town, you can email us at Garrettgb@Gmail.com and we'll hook you up with a copy of the CD right away! -G

Jan 20th, 2006 The CD is here!

So, the cd is here! And we've sold 96 copies so far, which means we're only forty bucks from the album going cardboard! I'm so proud I could spit. A cd release show is being planned for February 9th at the Attic, and the cd will be in local halifax record stores at that time. For an advance copy, you can certainly get them from any band member for 10$, or if you are out of the area, please email me at Garrettgb@Gmail.com with your name and mailing address and we will send you our CD: A Frame, A Spade, And Flowers in the Background, to anywhere on the planet for 12$. An order placement page will be set up soon for easy distribution, but this will have to do for now. Cheers! -G

Dec 15th, 2005 Finally, some real news to report!

Well well, where to start, I guess I'll talk about Saturday Night's show. We're playing at club NRG with the Kansas-Nebraska Act and Hurt the Lion, check the shows page for more details. We'd love to see ya there, as always. It's a show full of firsts and always a good time.

Shown above is a picture of Garrett in his Zombie makeup and new mohawk on Monday, October 31st. We went to $Rockin for Dollar$ at reflections and won $100 for best band costume. Of course it helps that the full cast and crew of the Play of the Living Dead was there lining the stage and the judging occured right after our set. Some guy yelled that it was a popularity contest, and then continued to get in a wrastling match with Jon "Horseface" Epworth. Personally, I always thought it would be even more insulting to lose at a popularity contest than because you dirtied your face, put on a sombraro and said you came dressed like a mexican.

A few days ago, we recieved our first batch of 50 CDs from the boys at Putitoncd.com and we're already nearly sold out! There will be a few for sale at the show on Saturday, and we've got another 50 coming next week for anyone who's interested. We're all very pleased with how it came out. Anyway, stay metal folks. -G

Oct 27th, 2005 BOO!

As usual, not much time to talk, but we'll say that album mastering is going well, wentworth was a santa-smashing blast, and there's a show comin up... in dartmouth. So if you're over yonder, or feel much like being over yonder on friday, see the shows page. We'd love to see ya there, as always. It's a show full of firsts and always a good time. -G

Sept 15th, 2005 The Search is back on!

Well, Tim is back from his Euro-trip, the fringe is over for me this year and I'm recovering nicely, and the other boys are rarin' to go (as always) which is good because we're playing a show on Friday at the Seahorse. We'll be up there with the Fantods and Scribbler and it's bound to be a good show (like it ever wouldn't be)

In our time off, Isaaq and I have re-recorded the vocals for Here Comes the Moon. We had alot of fun with it, as you can see if you'd like to check it out on our MUSIC PAGE. The rest of the tracks for Flowers in the Background have been mixed and the damned thing will be released as soon as we get off of our asses and get it mastered and printed.
In about a week, after the Pearl Jam show at the Metro Centre, we'll be making a trip out to Wentworth to get drunk and loud for a weekend. We still haven't solidified any transportation yet so if you've got a vehicle, we would love to work something out with you. -G

July 19th, 2005 The Search is on Hold

So, as many of you probably know, our bassist Tim Topping has hit the european trails and we wish him safe journeys and the best adventures. Here is a link to his EuroTim Weblog (Or 'blog', which is technocrat for "words that are on the internet") at http://sporadictim.blogspot.com . For the meantime, TSFA has taken a pause in playing. We plan to use this time for recording of a mostly acoustic, Sleepy EP. Don't worry, we haven't given up on the much awaited A Spade, A Frame, and Flowers in the Background. As I've been saying for too long, it is painfully near completion. We've recieved our nearest-to-last mix from the boys at Black Box and we've posted the latest mix on our MUSIC PAGE. There's only minor adjustments that need to be made to the rest of the tracks from there, as well as on the Exude studio recording of Miles Away. We anxiously await a final mix of Here Comes the Moon from Mr. John P. Rairdon, and we've added an electroacoustic arrangement by Garrett G. Barker that is entitled Told us Not to Play that is currently being completed. This makes our first EP a total of 9 tracks over a half hour of solid music. I promise, it will be here soon, and once Tim returns in September, we will have one hell of a CD release with the possibility of a tour to follow. You are all invited. Stay tuned for details! -G

June 26th, 2005 Summertime, and the Searching is Easy

Well, first, we'd recieved a number of requests for a new song to be added to the site for download. I guess I'm getting a bit tired of just Here Comes the Moon as well, so we've started a MUSIC PAGE. So far it's just got Here Comes the Moon and Rib on it, but hopefully it's a start of something bigger.
We played a show at Reflections on friday with Sour Cream, a Cream cover band with a southern rock twist and Thomas Danton Unlimited, Dan's solo project. I didn't get to see the Thomas Danton set, and from what I hear I'm pretty bummed that I didn't. Hopefully I'll get another chance. I did, however, see Sour Cream who much more than did justice to the classics. We don't have any more shows planned for the forseeable future, but it was a really good show to end on for the moment. We're hoping to get a couple more in before Tim's vacation, keep checking the shows page for updates. Still working on the album, we'll keep you posted. -G

June 1st, 2005 More of the same, but that's a good thing though!

So, we played last friday for a young lady's Sweet Sixteen Surprise birthday party. When we played, we played well. Perhaps it was too bad that we were asked to cut it short to make time for the iPod songs, but whatever. The show was fun and lucrative for us. We played well, Death by Nostalgia played extremely well, and also some guys from the girls high school that we didn't know all played their Chilli Peppers covers marvelously. A little iPod kareoke at least gave us a chance to test our 'new' speakers. Sadly neither our main PA nor our backup PA made it to the show, as they both blew out during equipment check.
We'll be playing tonight at Reflections with Janus. Cover is $3. We'll be playing on Friday, June 17th at the Seahorse with The Fantods, The Audients and Montgomery Moth.
Thanks to dancin' Pete Diamond work on our album has jumped to a point much closer to releasing. Very fine details must be worked out but that's pretty much it. We're aiming for a date in early-to-mid July, as our bassist Tim Topping will be leaving for a vacation to Europe in late July.
That's all for now, keep checking and we'll keep you up-to-date,
-G

May 07, 2005 - How about YOU update YOUR webpage...ass...

Fine, I'll make an entry on my vacation. You happy now?
So the show at the Seahorse was a big success (refer to the shows page). Everyone seemed to have a good time, bands networked with eachother and we all got to widen our fanbase just a little.
The EP is coming along, I promise. Albeit slowly. We're hoping to have it mastered and ready for distribution in time for a college tour in september, but no solid plans have been laid for this and recent complications may...complicate this. and no..I will not go into specifics about that now. Just sit tight, keep checking the page and rest assured that we're gonna try our best to come out and see New Brunswick and other parts of Nova Scotia with a CD treat for your ears. The acoustic song "Miles Away" has been added to the track list as an album closer. The preliminary mixes of this are very promising, I don't think anyone will be dissapointed..except possibly those few fans who enjoy us _because_ we are pretty much only hard fast rock
That's all I suppose, our nearest show is at the beginning of June at Reflections Cabaret. We'll see you then. -G

March 17th, 2005 - Kiss me Arse, it's Irish!

HAPPY ST. DRINKING EXCUSE'S DAY! I'm just writing in real quick to say that there's a show on saturday, march 19th at the Seahorse Tavern with Hadrian Seven and Janus. Also there's been alot of sudden progress on the album. We've been doing some mixing work on the recordings from the Black Box Studio's session, and there may be as many as three additional tracks to those. More on that the closer we get. Oh, and there's also going to be a big show at the Seahorse on April 30th. Keep checking the shows page for details. -G

February 26th, 2005 - What the fuck, Gus? You used to be cool, man!

So, many of you will already know this, but our show on Thursday the 17th with Highwater was a total bust. We'd set up our gear, gotten a sound check in, gotten up on stage to start playing and were asked to wait a minute, just until Tim was done talking to the manager (who has earned the affectionate pseudonym of "fucking buddy, there") in the back room. Sure enough, a minute later Tim and fuckin' buddy, there, came out of room and Tim informed us that we were not going to be playing that night.
I wanted to write about this immediately, I wanted to shout this occurance from the rooftops to serve as a warning to any other bands (although so many have successfully had good shows there) but the whole night was so bizarre that it's taken this long to sink in. The reasons why are still a little shady at this point. Something about us not bringing in enough people to the bar, and something else about the patrons we had brought bugging the regulars. This is all odd as we had twentish people there when the first set was ready to begin and they were in a completely different room than the video lottery addicts they call "regulars".
There are many partial stories kicking around about things that were said and things that happened, and I hope to collect them all and report them in this forum; but as of yet, Tim hasn't even mustered up his whole story, just that he hasn't been talked to like that for a long time. Stay tuned for all the dirt.-G

February 1st, 2005 - Rockin in the (frozen) Free World

Febuary is turning out to be a really good month for Searching for Alexander. We've got three shows coming up in the next couple of weeks. At places like Reflections, The Khyber Club and Gus' Pub with such bands as The KNA, The Audients and Highwater. More details availible on the Shows page.
PROPS! First, some mad props going out to The KNA for rocking such a good show with the Dean Malenkos at the cd release party for "the Album that Turns Girls into Sluts" at the Marquee on January 28th.
Also, props go to our comrades The Audients (formerly The Audience) for finding a suitable new name that's both a homonym and synonym of their previous callsign. That's all the updates for now. -G

January 14, 2005 - Alot of Catching up to do

So, we hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday season. We sure did. Ok..so what first..
Hell Freezes Over
This past tuesday was the Dean Malenkos last Hard-Rockin' Jamboree in Hell's Kitchen. Playing that night reminded me very much of when we first played the open mic there the last night The Heelwalkers hosted it; the place was packed and we were signed up to play third out of 12 bands but ended up going on seventh around 2:30am and still had a blast. Some of my clothing literally fell off of me while we were playing Way, Way Down the Road. Early in the night, there was easily more people in the crowd than at any show we've ever played. Mad props to the KNA for the show they provided that night.
It's sad to see tuesday nights go away like that, especially since that's where we got our whole start just as many other bands have. Here's hoping that the Marquee pulls through and that support for hard rock in Halifax is reintroduced by someone in some form. A special thanks to The Dean Malenkos for hosting for over 14 months and being such a strong supporter of TSFA specifically.
More Spitting and Swearing than Ever!
Last week's show at the Seahorse with The Audience and The Montgomery Moth was a blazing success. Aside from the cheering and applause we recieved from loyal fans and newcomers alike, a couple of punks spat a glass of beer at us during one song with such force that I was thouroughly hit all the way back on the drumkit. After some discussion we decided this was a compliment in that particular venue, so thank you punk-mother-fuckers for showing your support. Also, thanks to all the guys from both those bands and to everyone who came out to enjoy the audible variety plate we put on.
Burn these into your cornea!
Over my xmas holiday I was able to update the photos page. There are now many choice pics posted from 9 different shows. More have just been printed and are waiting to be scanned, so keep checking in and they'll be posted soon!
Reflecting upon Reflections
As you may know we played a show at Reflections in mid-December. The Audience was ably able to wow the actual audience with their multi-layered, hypnotic grooves. These guys really are a must-see for anyone who remotely considers themself a lover of music.
We ourselves..well..we've played better shows. Another attempt was made for Jay and I to switch responsibilities for a few songs, half the set this time actually. I didn't feel very strong about my playing in either half of the set, and I know the rest of the guys weren't too terribly thrilled about the whole show either. But, hey! You win some-you lose some, right? And it's been a while since we've had any show like that.
The Battle to help make Girls into Sluts
We'd like to give out our sincerest props to the KNA for giving hell at hell for the Dean Malenkos band battle and winning the opening position for their cd release party at the Marquee on January 28th. Also a hearty shout-out goes to some more brothers-in-arms; The Montgomery Moth for making it so far in their particular round of battle.
So that's it for now,
but please stay tuned for more info, photos, mp3s and curse words and Traerisms in the Guestbook. Mixing of our recent recordings is progressing which means more shows are sure to appear soon enough. But until then Kids, remember: Spit, Swear, Play with Fire and never get into a car with a stranger...unless it's a limosine. -G

December 7, 2004 - Has Tony moved to Gottingen?

So, last night we were practicing at Area 52 on Gottingen st. (as we usually do on mondays from 9-12 pm) and it was getting to be about 10 minutes to 12. We were trying a covertune from my old highschool band, 5Cents, when lights started flashing past the window. We looked out afterwards to check for UFOs but only saw two cops with a flashlight. Who, frowned, waved, and eventually gave us the signal to "cut it." We, and most of the ppl we've told this story to have found it pretty outrageous. Area 52 operates regularly, we weren't playing at any irregular volume, so why us and why then?
Anyhow, just a reminder that our next show is a week from thursday, on Dec. 16th at Reflections Cabaret. Also, we expect to be playing a show with The Audience and the Montgomery Moth at the Seahorse sometime in January.
A rough mix of Rib from our upcoming EP was rushed to us for the purpose of entry into the MIANS annual songwriting competition. As well as Rib, the original recording of Here Comes the Moon from our session in July of 2003 has been remixed and updated thanks to John P. Rairdon, and also entered into the competition. This version is availible for download. I promise, new mp3s and photos will be availible soon! -G

December 3, 2004 - awhg, Hell.

We did not get a spot in the Malenkos battle of the band next Tuesday, so my dreams of a Marquee stage are dashed on 0the unmerciful rocks of tardiness. Now for the good news! A rough mix of Rib has reached our ears and a clip may soon reach a website near you. (Hint: Its this one)-W.

December 1, 2004 - Hey all!

Just penning an update to let you all know we are still alive. We have finished all recording and overdubbing on our upcoming E.P. and are now entering early mixing stages. Hopefully we will have an early mix of Rib by the end of the week. Stay tuned for further updates and come on out to Hells Kitchen next Tuesday! -W.

Nov 12th, 2004 - A Khyber Clubbing over the head

On Saturday Nov 20th TSFA will be playing at the Khyber Club on Barrington St.(All members and new guests welcome). We will be opening for The Audience who should be checked out by all people everywhere.
On Monday the 15th, Jay, Isaaq and myself will be heading back out to Prospect for the day to continue overdubs at the Black Box productions recording studio. We hope to have put the finishing touches on Gagged and Bound, Born Cold, and She Was the Girl
Also, a very special thank you to Ms. Krista Blackwood for allowing me to work on this website during showtime of Neptune Theatre's "Three in the Back, Two in the Head". To Krista, you're my favourite! -G.

Nov 9th, 2004 - Black Box

On Monday the whole band moved on out to Prospect for the purpose of recording at the Black Box Productions Studio. It was incredible, in one day we had successfully laid the main tracks for 6 songs. These include: Rib, She was the Girl, Annabelle, Born Cold, Gagged and Bound, and Way, Way Down the Road. More work needs to be done of course, various members are planning individual trips out in the weeks to come for vocal and guitar overdubs and then for post-production work. We'll keep you informed as this project progresses.
In other news, a complete record of setlists have been included on the shows page and a lyrics page has been added to the site. Enjoy. -G

Nov 7th, 2004 - Good n' Sloppy

Last night was a hoot. I showed up around midnight and Bill came shortly after. We drank, we smoked, and we played as the last band of the night, right after Highwater. It was four of our fastest tunes and I was already exhausted but we gave'er good, trashed the stage at the end of Sympathy Card and the small crowd seemed to enjoy the set. Photos are up from this show on the photo page and more info is availible on the shows page.
In other news: Bill, Isaac, Jay and Tim headed out to prospect today to set up for a recording session tomorrow in Prospect. More on the recording later. -G

Nov 4th, 2004 - Some kinda Album

So on Sunday, the band heads out to Prospect for a couple days to do some decent recordings. We plan to lay down tracks for 5 or possibly 6 songs, and while I'm not nearly at liberty to release the final setlist for this amature release before it's even been touched, I can say that "Rib" will have the most attention paid to it during the process. -G

Nov 3rd, 2004 - Slop Implosion

This Saturday, TSFA will scoop out a baggie full of favourites to the crowd at the 1st Halifax Slop Implosion being held exclusively at Area 52 on Gottingen st. Come out and support our drunken jumping and yelling for whichever members are sober enough to make it this time! -G

Nov 2nd, 2004 - Website is here

Well here it is, a website. Please, come, explore. Most people so far have said "it's about time, fuckers," so I hope you're all happy now. We gots a guestbook you can sign, and a song you can listen to, and some of us even have personal pages up linked to our little pictures up above there. But everyone enjoy, and anyone please, feel free to pass along some suggestion. -G
