The Camillac

I got this idea from an article I saw in a magazine.  The Cadillac 472/500 is supposed to be 75 pounds lighter than a big block Chevy.  Later I read another article about someone who put a 500 in a El Camino.  I had an extra Camaro, and thought I should try this some day.  Well, I finally ended up with an extra Cadillac too, and...

The Motor mounts, adapter plates oil pan, oil pickup and oil pump were ordered from Larry Kruzick at CMD  2810-6 Parkway St.  Lakeland, Florida 33811.

In order to locate the engine as close to stock as possible I used the factory transmission crossmember and bolted a powerglide to the 472.  This should  put the transmission to  engine union at the right spot in relation to the Camaro's firewall.  I then concentrated on getting the Crankshaft centerline the same height as the Chevy and centered between the frame rails. I discovered that all I had to do was set the adapter plates on the frame crossmember and set the Cad down on them.

The adapter plates were modified to fit the holes where the Chevy motor mount towers had been bolted.  A tab was welded onto the bottom edge and then three holes drilled in each plate.

These plates are bolted directly to the subframe cross member and the crankshaft height was essentially the same as the small block Chevy.

With the engine sitting on the plates, on the Cad engine mounts, the engine mount nuts sit in the factory crossmember dimples.  I had to make the driver's side dimple just a little deeper.  you have to start the nuts on the mount stud before you set the engine all the way down, but you can get a wrench in there once the nuts are started.

Notice that cool oil pump?  The oil filter will fit but I would have to raise the engine to change it.  I have decided to put a remote oil filter kit on instead.

The passenger side exhaust manifold would fit with some grinding on the manifold and a little trim on the edge of the upper A arm, but there is no way that a stock manifold will fit in and around the power steering head on the drivers side.  I will have to get or make some sort of headers for this thing.
