42. Susannah Caroline Harris |
She was born in Lybrand, Post twp. Allamakee Co. IA on June 3, 1855. She married John Alfred Hammel in Lybrand, Allamakee Co. IA on February 4, 1880. John was born in Frankville, Winneshiek Co. IA on August 21, 1857. John was the son of John Hammel and Margaret Jokers. They farmed in Post twp. near Postville, on a farm near Bethel church which was the childhood home of Mr. Hammel. Handwritten notes by C. J. Harris, son of Charles Harris, on a copy of a family history: "Aunt Cal had dentures, she was a large woman with a laugh to shake the roof. Suddenly her uppers would drop, clank, and send we kids into hysterics!" Abstracted from an issue of the Postville Review in 1881: "John Hammel has bought the Mitchell farm for which he paid $1,000." and "John Hammel lost two cows and one two year old heifer, by the smut on the corn; his son, also, lost one cow by the same." In Sept. 1893 John went to the World's Fair in Chicago with J.R. Laughlin, Sam Harris, Arthur Swenson & Elisha Harris. Cal also did some traveling: 1909, Postville paper: Mrs. John Hammel returned Saturday from a two weeks visit to her sons and daughter in Milwaukee. After Cal died John retired and moved into Postville, where his widowed daughter, Stella Cook, kept house for him. Susannah died September 10,1916 Postville, Allamakee Co. IA at 61 years of age. John died March 17,1926 in Postville, at 68 years of age. They are buried in the Postville cemetery. Susannah C. Harris and John A. Hammel had 11 children: |

She was born in Lybrand, Allamakee Co. IA on February 24,1857. She was musically talented and attended Western College in Tama Co. IA. There, she met her future husband Eli. An Emerson upright piano, one of the first 3 pianos in the community, was bought for her. She married Eli H. Ridenour in Postville, Allamakee Co. IA on August 3, 1881. Eli was born in Shullsburg, PA on January 1853, but was raised in Colesburg, IA. Their wedding was announced in the Postville Review: MARRIED. "At the residence of the bride, at Lybrand, August 3d, 1881, by Rev. L.B. Hix; Mr. E.H. Ridenour, of California and Miss Delilah A. Harris." From the diary of Moses Bollman: 8-3-1881 "I & wife went to wedding at stone house LyBrand seen Delilah H and B.C. Redenour united, presents were many and grand." After their marriage, they removed to Stockton, CA and farmed a tract of land near the town of Woodbridge. He also was an industrial arts instructor at Stockton High School. Eli died June 19, 1928 in Stockton, San Joaquin Co. CA, at 75 years of age. Delila died October 23,1932 in Stockton at 75 years of age. They were cremated. Delila A. Harris and Eli H. He was born in Lybrand, Allamakee Co.IA on June 9,1859. He married Amanda Jane Eaton in Allamakee Co IA on December 23, 1880. Amanda was born in December 1859 in WI. Amanda was the daughter of Wells Eaton and Mary Wood. Henry and Amanda farmed in Post twp., Allamakee Co. IA. In 1881, their home and farm were severely damaged in the same tornado that destroyed his father's home. The local newspaper noted that Henry was re-building: "Elisha Harris has torn down the walls of the old stone house and is going to build a frame. H.S. Harris, his son, has a house nearly finished, which was a much needed improvement on his place. Messrs. Cresey & Stiles, of Postville and W. Callander of Lybrand are the builders." and 3 weeks later: "Henry S. Harris has his house plastered." In 1886 Henry traveled to Kansas with J.C. Taylor. He was considering a move and in 1887 he bought 320 acres & they removed to Norton, KS, engaging in fine stock raising, Clydesdale horses and Poland China hogs. He called his place "Prairie View Stock Farm. Later they moved to Adrean, MO in 1905, to Rolla, MO in 1908 and finally to Puente, CA in 1920; where they owned a fruit farm. Amanda died January 11, 1940 in CA, at 80 years of age. Henry died November 3,1940 in Covina, CA at 81 years of age. They are buried in Pomona, CA. Henry S. Harris and Amanda J. 46. Margaret Union Harris |
She was born in Lybrand, Allamakee Co. IA on August 1,1863. Margaret had unusual musical talent, but because her mother's health was poor and it was necessary for her to remain at home, she never had formal musical schooling. She also was an artist, working in charcoals. She married twice. She married Lorenzo Powell in August 1884. They lived on Righteous Run, near the Minert school in Post twp. Allamakee Co. IA. The land was first owned by Andrew J. Patterson. By 1890 they had removed to Norton, KS. They divorced shortly after, and Lorenzo went to Gunnison, CO mining country about 1892. Second, she married John R. Lockmiller in Colorado on January 24, 1898. John was born in Guthrie Center, Guthrie Co. IA in Sepember 1867. Margaret and John removed to Denver about 1896. After John died she moved back to Postville, IA to live with her brother Jim Harris for 3 yrs. She then moved into a room on the first floor of the Citizens Bank Bldg. until her death. John Lockmiller died on January 4, 1913 in Denver,Arapaho Co. CO at 45 years of age. Crown Hill cemetery, Denver. Margaret died April 11, 1923 in Postville, IA at 59 years of age. 47. Charles Andrew Harris |
He was born in Lybrand, Post twp. Allamakee Co. IA on May 14,1866. 'Charley' was a member of the infamous Postville Phil Sheridan baseball team for many years in the 1880's and again as an umpire in 1895. He attended a school in Burlington, IA taking "commercial studies" for a time in 1887, but returned home to work on the family farm only a few months later. He went to Wisconsin in 1890, returning home in 1891 to farm and raise full blood black Polled Angus stock. He married Alida Louise Harrington in Postville, Allamakee Co. IA on March 30, 1893. Alida was born in Farmersburg, Clayton Co. IA on March 1, 1876. She was the daughter of D'Esting Harrington and Nancy Anna Burnham. D'Esting Harrington lead an orchestra/band that entertained the area communities for many years. In the summer of 1902 Charles told family members that he was having severe mood swings and asked to be committed to an institution. He had spent several nights in town with his brother Jim because he feared he would do harm to his family. On October 31 he went into the woods and hung himself. Charles died October 31,1902 in Post twp., IA, at 36 years of age. He is buried in the Minert cemetery. Alida died September 4, 1961 in Postville, Allamakee Co. IA, at 85 years of age. She is buried in the Postville cemetery with her second husband Henry A. Lange. Charles A. Harris and Alida Harrington had 6 children: |

He was born in Noble Co.OH on March 24, 1860. He was schooled in OH and remained at home until of legal age. About 5 yrs. later in the early 1870's he removed to Post twp. Allamakee Co. IA and purchased land. He married Caroline Malinda Segrist in Postville, Allamakee Co.IA on February 17,1887. Caroline was born in Postville on September 27,1870. Caroline was the daughter of Louis Segrist and Mary Ann Joyce. The Postville Review September 1895: "J. H. Meier has sold his farm, northeast of town, for $9,000 - $37.50 per acre. Cheap enough. J. W. Harris is the purchaser. Possession given March 1st, next." Caroline died January 13, 1938 in Postville, Allamakee Co. IA, at 67 years of age. James died May 31,1939 in Postville at 79 years of age. They are buried in the Postville cemetery. James W. Harris and Caroline Segrist had 9 children: |

He was born in Caldwell, Noble Co.OH on March 24, 1862. He attended public school in Noble Co. OH. He removed to Allamakee Co. IA where he was employed for 4 yrs. by his uncle Elisha Harris. He married Ida E. Smith in Post Twp, Allamakee Co.IA on September 22,1885. Ida was born in Post twp. on May 3, 1864. Ida was the daughter of John N. Smith and Susan Lee. Sampson and Ida farmed in Post twp. on the farm next to his brother Elisha until he bought a farm from Evan Swenson for $2,000 in 1892. In 1893, Sam went to the Chicago World's Fair. In 1901 he purchased 71 angora goats, being the first to raise them in the vicinity. Ida died March 27, 1921 in Marshalltown, Marshall Co. IA, at her daughters home. Sampson died September 29,1941 Postville, Allamakee Co. IA at 79 years of age. They are buried in the Postville cemetery. Sampson A. Harris and Ida E. Smith had 2 children: |
