She wrote a letter to the Postville Review in response to an editorial: " We shall never know all about Kansas until we go there, and as we do not expect ot go, we shall probably die with a great amount of ignorance of that country." He was born in Morgan Co OH on June 19,1846. He removed with his parents to Allamakee Co. IA in 1854. He married Charity McDonald in Postville, Allamakee Co. IA on March 12, 1869. Her granddaughter Esther Orr Swenson obtained membership in the DAR based on this lineage. Will & Charity farmed in Post twp. and bred Aberdeen cattle. He brought the first Aberdeen Angus cattle to the vicinity, and for many years he was one of the most extensive breeders of that breed of cattle in Allamakee county. His cattle purchases often made the news: "Will Harris was up to Cresco last week and bought a dandy two-year-old Aberdeen Angus bull from Dr. Clemmer's famous herd. Weight 1,630 lbs." and he frequently took his stock to the sale barns in Chicago. Their farm residence was described as "commodius" and they were active in community and church affairs. Charity often brought gifts of wild plums to her friends. Postville Review, January 24, 1880: "Our friends did not all die with the old year. We have the pleasure of giving the following list of subscribers who have come up manfully and secured receipts since our last issue: Ella Harris, Joseph Nicolay, Wm. Harris, W.S. Webster and Dr. Green, of Postville." In 1883 Will served as a petit juror & went with his brother-in-law J.C. Taylor to the Chicago exposition and Illinois State Fair. He served as a director for the Farmers Creamery in 1891. Charity often traveled; she visited her parents in Nevada, MO in 1883 & 1887; the J.C. Taylor family in Kansas in 1887; St. Paul, MN and the World's Fair in Chicago in 1893. 39. Amanda Jane Harris |
She was born in Bloom Twp. Morgan Co. OH on December 23,1849. She removed with her parents to Allamakee Co. IA in 1854. A family history: "Amanda remembered walking along behind the wagon train on the way from Ohio and crying because she was so tired." She married James Riddle Laughlin in Castalia, Winneshiek Co. IA on May 4,1872. They were married in a double wedding ceremony with her brother George Harris and his sister Ella Laughlin. James was born in Post twp, Allamakee Co. IA on September 25,1851. He was the son of John Laughlin and Jane Cuttle, early pioneers of the area. Amanda and Jim farmed in Post twp. on land originally homesteaded by Jim's father. Handwritten notes by C. Joe Harris, her nephew: "Went there often as a boy. Aunt Mag Lochmiller form Denver always took me with her when she visited her. I remember strawberries and cream and their wonderful apple orchard." J.R. advertised "Mamoth Pearl" seed potatoes for sale in the local paper in 1882. And in January 1884 the Review ran this note: "J.R. Laughlin shot and killed a large bald headed eagle near his residence a few days ago. It measured about seven feet from tip to tip of wings. The national bird is scarce in this section and it is quite a curiosity." J.R. and Amanda were active in their community and the church, J.R. being superintendant of the Bethel church Sunday School for a time and Amanda a Sunday School teacher. He was also an active participant in Republican politics, holding the office of Allamakee co. assessor in the latter 1880's. In 1909 he served on a federal Grand Jury in Dubuque. J.R. went to the World's Fair in Chicago in 1893 & in 1894, Amanda traveled with her sister-in-law Margaret to Kansas to visit her sister Mary E. Taylor. 40. George Wesley Harris |
He was born in McConnelsville, Morgan Co., Bloom twp., OH on December 22,1851. At age 3, in 1854, he removed with his parents to Allamakee Co. IA. He married Sarah Ellen 'Ella' Laughlin in Castalia, Winneshiek Co. IA on May 4, 1872, in a double ceremony with his sister Amanda and her brother James. Sarah was born in Post twp., Allamakee Co., IA December 14,1855. Sarah was the daughter of John Laughlin and Jane Cuttle. After their marriage George worked for his father for a year, then purchased his own farm, a part of the Laughlin estate. He bred Poland China hogs and his ads can be seen in the Postville Review for many years. He also kept bees. G.W. & Ella were active in church & community activities. He served as a trial juror in 1895. Abstracts from the Postville Review: --1879. "As our neighbor, Geo. Harris, was driving out with his new team today, he overtook Mr. P.M. Terrill, with a load of cord wood. These gentlemen bantered each other..... cracked their whips and away they went, pell mell, hurry skurry for about 40 rods, Terrill coming out two rods ahead, cord wood and all. George, 'If at first you don't succeed, try, try again' my boy." --1881: "E.R.A. Brainard, bought of G.W. Harris twenty acres of land for which he paid $140." --1898: "Rev. Dickensheets is holding revival meetings at the church. The last night of the old year they continued the meetings until the new year came in. Among the other exercises ...... G.W. Harris gave a sketch of the church which he has attended since his mother used to take him by the hand and lead him there. More such mothers are needed." --1899: Geo. Harris, E. Swenson and A.W. Swenson started for 'The land of the Dakotas.' A.W. with a view of locating somewhere in Minnie-ha-ha county. --1909: George Harris is putting in a new bath room with all the best modern improvements. His granddaughter Florence recollects: "...after grandmother died, he went to California and joined a religious thing. He lost all his money. When he came back he lived with us for a long time. He was a very religious man." This religious movement was headed by Amy Semple McPherson, a cult evangelist in the 1920's. Ella listed herself the mother of only 5 children on both the 1900 & 1910 census.....perhaps this gives some insight into the terrible grief she bore after son Roger was killed so tragically in 1898. She may have sunk into a deep depression, her health failing...as she died soon there-after. Sarah died December 13,1914 in Allamakee Co. IA at 58 years of age. George died July 31, 1935 in Postville, Allamakee Co. IA at 83 years of age. They are buried in the Minert cemetery Post twp. Allamakee Co. IA. George Wesley Harris and Sarah Ellen Laughlin had 6 children: |

41. James 'Jim' McGarry Harris |
He was born in Morgan Co.OH July 23,1853. He removed to Allamakee Co. IA as an infant in 1854. He married Margaret Jane Jemison in Post Twp, Allamakee Co. IA on October 16, 1874. Margaret was born November 7, 1857. Margaret was the daughter of David Jemison and Sarah Burge. They farmed in Post twp. until the late 1800's. Bethel UB Church was built on part of his land and he was for a time the secretary of the UB Sunday school at Bethel. Jim served for a time as a J.P. in Post twp. until he resigned in 1882. His farm residence was totally destroyed in a fire in July 1884, but he was insured by the Hawkeye Insurance Co., and received an adjustment of $1062.80. Within months he was rebuilding and his new country residence was ready to live in by October of that same year. The Postville Review described the new home as: "...indeed a fine country residence, and there are few better, of its size, in town or country. It is a two story frame, of the square pattern and neatly and tastefully finished throughout." The following July, lightening struck and fire destroyed his barn -- he again had insurance and rebuilt. J.M. and Margaret both were plagued by maladies and illness on and off through-out the years. He had a large tumor removed in 1887, spent time in Chicago for medical care in 1890 and came down with "painters colic" later the same year. Margaret had surgery in Dubuque for a 'large rupture' in 1889 and she is frequently on the newspaper 'sick list'. Between the years of 1889 and 1893 J.M. built 2 or 3 other homes and lived in them for short periods!! Finally , in 1893 he sold his farm to Evan Swenson , and moved into Postville for good.. For years there was a huge 'iron dog' statue in the front yard of his home on West Tilden St. This dog most likely had significance in his life. He was a man of many persuasions: He sold insurance in the early 1890's. He started a furniture and undertaking business in 1900. He sold his furniture business in 1907 and in 1916 he took Louis Schutte as a partner in his undertaking business. He ran for Allamakee Co. coronor in 1926. He retired in 1929. Margaret died on March 1, 1930 in Postville, Allamakee Co. IA, at 72 years of age. James died on August 4,1930 in Postville, Allamakee Co. IA at 77 years of age. They are buried in the Postville cemetery. James M. Harris and Margaret Jemison had 4 children, 3 who died in infancy: |
